Lapping my cpu and hsf

I've read over many guides (including the one stickied on top of this forum), but I still have a few questions to make sure that I do everything correctly

I'll be using the premium lapping kit from easypckits.com

I'm planning to lap my s939 Athlon64 X2 3800+, but I don't have neoprene to protect my pins. I'd like some suggestions for alternate materials that I could use.

I want a nice mirror finish, well...at least as nice as 10 micron sandpaper will allow. How much ceramique do I use, will the normal half-grain of rice be too much?

My final question for now, what would you recommend for rinsing the sandpaper and hsf during/between grades?

Right now I'm thinking of just using tap water with isopropyl as a back-up

something like craft foam or low low density polystyrene would be ok

If you get it flat enough, a very very thin covering will be ok. If you have a high pressure mounting system then dont worry too much about over application.

I never used anything to protect the pins.. Just held the CPU in my hand and scrubbed. :)

Safe as anything really.

Dont do that ^

939 pins are way too easy to bend and you cant apply enough pressure without a pad to do a proper, worthwhile job

Thanks for the input guys

looks like I get to go hunting for polystyrene (or something like it)

if all goes well I should have plenty of pictures before the weekend is over

posted pics in my rig gallery (oc3d uploads ftw)

managed to get about a 3-4C drop in idle temps and a 5-7C drop in load temps

part of that might be because windows is being screwy and saying I'm running at 2.0 instead of 2.4 (reported in bios)...but I don't think the clock affects temps as much as the voltage (which is 1.4 in windows and bios)

D drive has gone missing in windows too (but it's detected in bios and post)

anyone got any advice for that?
