Lack of enthusiast-ism

I think hardware has sucked the life out of enthusiast eager to kill their latest bit of kit.

B4 signing up to OC3D some 50+ years ago, I'd often read it and it's articles, most of which would evolve around Kemp, XMS, Frag, Lloyd, Ham, PV - "GOT THIS BIT OF KIT - WATCH WHILST I TRY AND KILL IT !".....

.. loads of pics, bit'o humor and fantastic results.

Not only that, it'd be just a thread about new kit in the flash end of the market or something. Or look what ABit/ASUS/etc have sent us to destroy.

Having bought a mass of kit a few years ago, I think my most exciting piece of kit recently was the chair I bought yesterday cos my back was acting up.

WtEf! is going on !

I'm kinda in the same boat, used to get old'ish kit and see how long I could play Delta Force without a heat sink before killing the cpu. Now when I get old kit I just make a crappy desktop and sell it to friends/family. Sayin that tho, the drawer of bits is gettin quite full, could be an endurance test on the horizon before long !

How many threads we got on some1's exciting new piece of hardware, that's not just cosmetic, that they've tortured and got some outstanding results ?

It's been mentioned about hardware getting to a stage where the enthusiast would be less and less happy with how far they can push it. 4g/4.2g on air is so last-generation. Sub 11/12/13 SuperPI. Now what ?

More to the point perhaps, the limits have been pre-set as to how far u can push it maybe ?

Rasta, from where I'm sitting it's pretty simple. Force you're way in to the official OC3D team, start up your own 'Torture Test' section and enjoy your retirement.

I think modern hardware just dies too easily. I mean my old 478 board still works and i stood on it, literally. After being subjected to -40°C temps and 2.0vcore.

Had a few 775 boards die just form general use. Only one I've been happyish with for torturing was the blitz and that's needed mobo cpr twice and a part soldered back on.

New suction line tomorrow though

Alright alright.

For giggles, you let me know what you want to torture test (I've got some 775 boards in the office to have some fun with)

In fact, I've got an RoG Blitz P35 motherboard sat under my desk - Who wants to kill it?

I get ur points, and I think I've diluted my original thinking along the way also.

To coin another way of looking at it, let's take a 5870/90 - ok the site has it's testing one for review, the article is there, all read and every1's happy with that.

How about the follow up post from the member's, both long standing and new, that have bought the card and have done xyz with it ?

Link me 1 on OC3D. Link me 5 and I'll shut the hell up.

The extreme side of things has been swallowed by comercialism. If u granted any1 the same source of product, the records would be more contested.

Suprizes me that that hasn't lead to a great line in cooling products. Methods haven't greatly changed over the years, although there are some small chinks of light that aren't quite making it atm.

Do bear in mind rast, there's a recession on if you hadn't noticed. Even just a few years ago I was changing my kit more times than my undies. Now I worry if I have enough money to make it to the end of the month, nevermind oc someting to destruction. Now I look for reliability, value for money not oc'ing headroom etc... Hell I've even wound my CPUs neck in from 4ghz back to stock to prolong it's life!

I don't think the kits changed or the want to push tech but what has is the available income to spend on said items.

Agreed with Lasher. A big mortgage taken out when we should have been making money on our flat (luckily we aint lost any really), big leccy bills and lack of movement in the jobs market have all weighed it down.

Add that to the fact I have to be responsible nowadays and you've got no extreme OC'ing!

Mad isn't it.

And to think at one point in time the enthusiast stuff was done mainly by latter-teenagers, students, without a penny to buy a beer with.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from Rast.

What do you want to see happening from manufacturers? I can always feedback and see what trouble I can stir up :D
