Read up on headfi.org and they were recommended quite a fair bit for under $100/£50 so I'll hopefully be able to do the same
smile.gif
it's mainly for music and films but I feel they'll be awesome under gaming and such
smile.gif

Will let you all know how I get on with them.

Oh these are a nice set to have. If you can get them when they're on sale, it would be fantastic. You've got them for a great deal.
smile.gif

They are also SUPER comfy.

Yeah I've read up so many reviews on it, I'm really excited

Yeah I was debating getting the xb700 but it was just a little too much for me to splash out on... But I think I can manage this one. Also the xb700 is a lot more bass-ier (the speakers internally are a bit bigger) but I think these xb500s should work out fine

just need a sound card to go with it... Is there much difference between the DX and D1 cards?

I like the price on these as well
biggrin.gif
a very comfortable range for me or anyone

I believe the DX uses a similar audio processing chip as the D1. I think that's where the quality comes in.

So it'd still be better to get the DX anyway? I have the chance to get the DX for £49.99 (cheapest I could find!) so would that be best? Or could I go for the D1?

D1, if I recall correctly is very close or exactly the same as the DX. The D1 is the PCI version. Performance of the card should be no less. I would get the DX and it seems you've found a great deal too.
smile.gif

Cool. Well it's with PCWorld and there're none I can collect from my local stores...
sad.gif
So I don't want to hold my breath with them. If I can, I'd like to get something around that price range so I may go with the D1, I have PCI slots free and no SLi so they're fine.

Thanks for all the help and feedback though Cola.
smile.gif
Massive help.

You're welcome.
smile.gif

The only thing I would consider now is transferability. You know one day when motherboards don't have anymore PCI slots, it would be great to have the DX instead. That way you wouldn't have to spend extra on another similar or the same sound card.

No problem.

Yeah, that's the only thing stopping me from getting the D1... May ask for it for my birthday or Christmas.

It would make a great birthday gift. I think the DX and most of the Asus sound cards are pretty well priced for the quality of the product. I think the only Creative sound card right now that is still recommendable is the X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro/THX versions. It's great for a HTPC or those of us who don't have space in the system for a sound card and prefer it over the onboard sound.

Is that the USB one? Looks nice, but a little bit more than the Asus DX card.. Although on headfi.org (I think that's the forum name...) they've said Creative's EQs are a lot better than Asus's. I think (to them at least) they feel Asus is restricting and not as flexible as Creative's. I don't know, not sure.

Maybe I'll give PCWorld an e-mail to see if they definitely have the DX in stock.

Thanks again Cola.

EDIT: Sod it, just ordered it anyway, see what happens.

Yup, it's the USB external unit. It's expensive alright, but reasonable and expected as it's different from most sound cards out there. I actually believe Asus EQ is much more reliable and it's quite sensitive, but if you have a very good speaker system you definitely won't be needing the program's EQ function. I actually wouldn't touch Creative's EQ settings. I think they put too much of an effect on it and makes the sound outstanding and not as natural sounding without the EQ or what you would likely hear from a more natural sound source (Hi-Fi/audiophile type of system). It's like trying to put additives to the sound and affecting the nature of it to make it sound better when it doesn't need to be. Not sure if this makes any sense?

Ah okay that makes sense then

Well you have a pair of nice speakers too. I don't think you'll need to set up an EQ with the DX. It will be great out of the box. Just make sure to connect the floppy power to the connection on the DX. There's an included adapter for Floppy to 4 pin Molex in case your PSU doesn't have a Floppy power handy.

Download the latest driver from Asus here:

I'd rep but Im on my phone! Nothing but helpful
smile.gif

No worries buddy. Glad to be of some help.
smile.gif

Seems Asus hasn't really made anything new in terms of internal sound cards after the Xonar Xense.

Well I must say I'm impressed!

All I need is a longer lead for the headphones and I'm all set. Unless someone can help me out with the front panel? I've connected it up to the DX but I'm not getting any sound through it whatsoever. Any advice on this? Muchos grats!

Did you use the HD connector or the AC97? Also, check whether you've configured the Xonar DX control centre with the audio output set to the Front Panel. It should be under Analog Out. There are 3.5mm extensions out there if you need to extend the length of the cable from your headset. That way you can also plug it directly to the DX.

As always thanks Cola, although is it something I need to configure all the time? I'm not too bothered as now I can get sound out of my headphones. Just need to tweak the EQ
smile.gif

Yeah that's definitely a good idea, and possible an audio switch so I can change between headphone and speakers? Or is there no such thing?
