Just got cable speed upgrade (at last!!)

I just checked out the Virgin website, to see if the free speed upgrade had been scheduled for my area yet. Those on a 4MB connection were getting a free upgrade to 10MB. My area was one of the last to get it, and I only found out it had been completed by checking the website. Nice of Virgin to let us know it's done.

You have to reset the modem to get the new speed, so I wonder how many customers are still on the old speeds, cos Virgin didn't go out of their way to inform us that the upgrade had been done and that we needed to reset the modem. I just reset and checked, 10MB all the way!! Yaay!

I'll have to ask my dad what speed were at.. I think the current speed atm is 8MB, and it since Aldershot has been completed. But I dunno what package were on, all I know is were on the XL tv package.

that's a bit stupid.. your paying for that speed and they limit it.. phone them (even though we are customers we still have to pay 20p a minute)

I'm on 2MB ATM, I've always begged my parents to upgrade the internet but apparently the line in our house can't handle more than 3MB. Surely that must be bs. I know next to nothing about networking, so if anyone could answer I'd be very greatful. :)

depends what sort of cable your on.. I think Virgin has updated to fibre and your area could still be on copper.

lol i'm afraid thats just the way it is. They have a traffic light system for heavy users. It's crap but what can you do?

Just phone them up, and threaten to go to Sky or something, then they will give you free stuff :p. We got a V+ box for doing that, even though were on a 18 month contract with them for doing it, with bills going to about £80-90 a month WITHOUT sky movies and sky sports. terrible.

Im in the same boat.. and yes it is down to the old copper wirering hasn't got enough bandwidth. I live in a lovely little village so that makes up for the slow speed. :)

It seems we've still got 2mb. I'll get mum to ring and threaten them again. Last time we did that - a couple of years ago - we got free anytime calls to landlines thrown in to our package.

The 2mb connection isn't getting an upgrade mate, unfortunately.

Talking about the bandwidth throttling, I had an interesting conversation with the Virgin techhies today. I had my conn. throttled down to 2MB just after I posted the first thread. When Ham mentioned speedtest.net, I had already done a test and it came up 10MB, but after Ham posted, I tried again to find it had been throttled. So I rang them up to get some clarification, and they explained it. They also gave me a linkie which explains it in black and white:

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management.php

The conn. is back upto 10mb now as 5hrs have passed. I asked them how much I had downloaded to fall foul of the throttling. I nearly fell off my chair when he told me I had downloaded nearly 30gb in the past 24 hours!! I had to reinstall my system the other day, and have had to download all my digital download games purchases, so it's taken some right hammer. I was in the top 1% of bandwidth hoggers at that time, so I couldn't really argue with the bloke.

After he explained it all to me, it does seem pretty fair, and now if I have any large downloads, I will be doing them at off-peak times.

I'm on my colleges broadband atm. (~1MB Upload ~10MB Download and no cap :D)

At Home I've only dial up. :(

Having to browse with Images, Flash and Javascript off and in many cases having to actually read text from the html source code is a joke in todays world...

LOL you see, this is where we play clever in Holland..

We offer a networking system for our neighbours.. we split the cost 50/50 and share the net, although we will suffer from slow net at times.. it's worth it for fast net :)

Was thinking of doing that.. linking multiple houses together on one system LOL! Make them pay more than I pay for my broadband, make some money out of it, though.. isn't that classed as illegal?

Woo, 16mb broadband here I come :) Just switched from Virgin to Sky. 6th november Sky+ HD box :D, phone and internet for about £30 cheaper than Virgin, and it's only £75 box installation from £150.
