It looks like AMD's Ryzen CPUs will not support Windows 7 after all

shot in the foot tbqh so many people have reverted back to Win 7 or as I have, moved over to Linux. Really do not see why Microsoft should get the monopoly on tech

personally i think this is the correct move, legacy support is a huge burden that can hamper development of new and improved systems.

drag people kicking and screaming if you have to

While I agree that we need to support newer systems I do think they should still support Windows 7 because by not supporting it, they are cutting off nearly half the market which is a rather large bullet in their foot

I think by saying half the market you are misrepresenting the facts slightly.

Windows 7 accounts for roughly half of existing systems, but considering this is a brand new architecture on a brand new platform, the number of existing systems that will receive a zen based processor will be considerably less than brand new builds.

If you're running windows 7 then you're probably less likely to be upgrading to the latest and greatest CPUs. I think it makes sense for a brand new processor to not to support an OS that is EOL.

There will always be exceptions but for the most part it's just common sense from AMD - and others do it as well.

Quite,

Having worked in this business for the transition from xp to 7 and 7 to 10 the same resistance was present when XP stopped being supported by manufacturers.

Kabylake doesn't support 7, Z170 doesn't properly support 7 why should AMD waste funds on legacy OS's that will be dropped completely from support by other manufacturers soon enough.

It isn't really AMD's fault, without Microsoft's support giving a legacy OS support for new hardware is too difficult.

There is also no reason why Ryzen won't support Linux, as that community will certainly add Ryzen support.

If I recall didn't MS do something for XP called the "AMD Dual Core Optimiser" when they released Vista & Seven, I'm surprised if they don't follow on to keep the OS market majority.

Good point. However, there must still be a large chunk of the market who did not buy Kaby because they refuse to upgrade Windows 7.

Maybe they tried, then realised it was not economical.

TBH this is a good thing and they shouldn't support 8 or 8.1 either as there is no point championing unsupported microsoft software as in the end it wont be doing them any favours

I thought it was odd because they no longer support Windows 8 with their Crimson drivers.

I was using a version of 8 that was perfectly stable and I couldn't be bothered updating it to 8.1 and it refused to let me install any drivers. I was annoyed, but then realised I could hop straight to 10.

It is a bit of a shame though. Tons of people are still using 7 and Kaby is useless to them too. Ah well, ever onward and upward I guess.

lol....I've seen people giving AMD a pass on this not no not Intel say it's a di*k move bye Intel but yet AMD was the first company to announce this.

People can't have it both ways.

I can see this blowing up in all of their faces.....lol

What you on about?
This was started as a rumor that was taken out of context. They basically said just this.
We have Zen working on W7 in our lab testing, but not all features may have been working.
People took that wrong. They quickly shut down the rumors and said it won't.
Besides, it would be unwise for them to do so. Going against MS would not be ideal. They could easily push them out of the API development which is something they need for there GPUs.

In Microsoft's defence (I don't do this often), I can see why they would do it. MS are pushing hard to have the market saturated with Win 10 and plowing all their support for that and UWP. They are trying to follow the Apple OS philosophy, by having a standardised OS, support and updates come faster with less workload for legacy support.

As mentioned before in the thread, anyone building a system using Ryzen are more than likely going to be using the latest Windows version. As with all big companies, it's about streamlining your process for greater profit, something we all have to accept, not necessarily like, but accept that is how it will always go.

I just can't see it working for Microsoft like it does with Apple.

1. The fan base for both companies are completely different (Apple fans) will buy just about anything that Apple comes out with even that $300 book. Also Apple doesn't charge an arm & a leg for their OS's compare to Microsoft.

2. Microsoft fan base even if there's such a thing, The user base for Windows is just way too large for even Microsoft to do that also Microsoft should be lowering the price of Windows 10 there's no way it's worth what there charging, So bascilly Microsoft is saying you have to buy a whole new Motherboard, CPU & Memory & OS which could be about $1500 that's why i just can't see it working.

So IMO the differences between the fan bases are that Apple fans love to support Apple with everything they do but the Microsoft fan base doesn't.

There are people are quite happy still using Windows XP, Vista, 7 & 8/8.1.

People can remain happy using XP/vista/7 but they can't expect support for new products. If someone is spending $1500 on brand new computer parts i think they can fork out $120 for a home license of windows 10

His only valid point imo is the fact that MS should make windows cost less. MUCH less. It brings in the least amount of money per year for them. They really should just make it cost less. They wouldn't even notice it.

That is where i disagree Microsoft doesn't have to sell those licenses for $149 now when Windows has become a service Microsoft could be easily selling those copies for like $50.00 not $149.00 or $139.

I remember years ago Microsoft said they were going to reduce the price of Windows to a more reasonable amount did that happen no Microsoft is just a rip off company.

No wonder why Windows is the most pirated software around.....lol
