Is there any hope or is my HDD dead?

I have a hiachi hds721010cla322 1tb hard drive for storage in my pc. i took it out yesterday, and when i put it back in it now shows up as a 32mb RAW disk.

I would hate to lose all my files but i must admit if i do it is my fault. the disc has been giving me errors for a while now but i never had money to replace it or buy a backup disk.

it looks like its only seeing the drive cache in disk management but it still spins up and it randomly sounds like its looking for something but nothing showing up other than the 32MB RAW.

is there any hope for this drive or will i just have to accept my losses and start a fresh?

Umm, I'm no expert but a few years ago this happened to me. I looked around on eBay for the exact model and swapped the boards over. That made the disc work so I cod get the data off.

Another time I remember I paid £30 for a data recovery tool, it took ages and there were tons of corrupt files, but it worked and I got most stuff back. Now however I back up all the time.

If your looking for cheap discs don't forget you can buy cheap IDE drives and a very cheap usb enclosure and use that. Or even get a pci IDE raid card and a few cheap drivers. That's just about the only use I have for IDE now.

Since you said it has been giving you some errors it may be dead, but I would still try this since it seems to be happening to many other people who fixed it.

tried solution 1 but this software doesnt seem to work for me and i dont know why. whenever i start it up it says error loading driver, i also tried to use it on xp and it started fine but didnt list any drives at all.

what am i doing wrong?

edit: also tried solution 2 and it doesnt list any drive at all, the bios still lists it though and a couple of the hdd tools in that ultimate boot disc do too

EDIT2: plugged the drive into an old system and retried solution 2, the drive showed up that time but when i clicked restore full capacity it said failed and started giving me smart warnings. but when i plugged it back into my main rig it showed up with full capacity and i could access all my files :D

Thanks for the help :)

i have ordered a 1TB caviar black anyway since this was a bit of a wakeup call
