Is onboard RAID 5 crap?

Hey, I want to set up a raid 5 array with my gigabyte z68xp-ud3p onboard raid controller but I keep hearing that motherboard raid is useless? any info on this matter would really help as I am proper green when it comes to raid! it will be 3 x seagate 1.5tb green drives....

On board 5 was dogshit when I tried it. Both hardware and software was slow as fuck.

Raid for anything other than 0 is expensive to do right.

Cheers Tom, glad i saw the wow server vid! was all ready to go ahead aswell! Think I have to save up and do it right. Merry christmas and thanks for the vids!

RAID1/0 is fine for onboard as there are not many calculations needed. RAID5, however, is far more intensive and thus separate hardware is needed for it to work well.

I'd recommend doing raid through windows; theory being it is easier to get it working again if your raid controller goes tits up, or you change your motherboard. I've only ever tried it with windows, so no personal experience.

Hi everyone

I was thinking of building a separate pc for storage purposes only. I was thinking of using onboard raid 5 controller with 5 3TB hard drives.

Is onboard raid reliable?, and just how slow is it?

Thanks

honestly there is so much to go into it depends entirely on how your going to use. Raid 5 loves large writes and all read types. but if your going to do alot of small writes (such as database work) stay away from it as you quickly get sucked into a write hole. See :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID_5_write_hole

the only recommendation i can really give ti to give it a try and see if it works for you. i would recommend using the intel matrix raid as that is a better implementation that windows soft raid.

software raid 5 does not have to be slow it just depends on the implementation.

if your willing to learn and put in a little time then linux mdraid would be a good fit for you though with the amount of drives you have and the size i would recommend raid 6 instead
