Is my video card dying?

Game Over

New member
Ok, so have had no issues with my card so far. Have played bf3 no problem in the past, just finished up mass effect 3. Decided to reinstall BF3 as I had not played it for a while.

When I start to play I get some serious screen issues That I have never experienced before. When I go to the graphics settings in game and make some changes it can even crash. I have installed all the latest drivers and its still doing this. Is my card dying or could this just be some kind of bad driver issue? The card is AMD 6950 and just over a year old.

Firstly I'm impressed you got the video done.

Can you play other games flawlessly still ?

.. I'm thinking along the lines of an experience I had with Crysis2. It would do similar to that, then suddenly an update came out and it magically went away.

Can you remember applying any BF3 patches before that perhaps you havent now ?

(in the past we'd probably all be telling you your graphics memory is being stressed too much for some reason)

I do not have a lot of spare space for games so its usually only one installed at a time. I will probably uninstall BF3 and maybe try something like Metro 2033.

As far as patches, I do not remember installing any special patches in the past, any updates usually auto install from origin.

Over the years I've had this happen to me a few times, most of the times it was a driver- or game-related bug/glitch. Testing with other games is indeed a good thing to try. Perhaps you could stress test your graphics card using MSI Kombustor, see if it can handle that. Is your card overclocked? If so, try running BF3 with stock clocks..

Not overclocked, But I do have MSI Kombustor I believe, Ill try running that now.

I will post a video of that in the morning, Also I may try reverting back to an earlier version of the drivers.

Update..

Here is a video of my Kombustor run.

I am a little nervous as you can see a little ground shadow flicker at the very start, particle test at 0:44 and some vertical lines at 1:24. I hope this could just be a bad driver version, using catalyst 12.3 currently.

The vertical lines @ 1.24 are normal i belive as i get them as well on all my machines!!! but the flickering @ the start and @ .44 is not normal. I think its a driver issue, try uninstalling drivers then use drive sweep (i think thats what it is called) then reinstall drivers... Maybe it will fix your issue, if not use older drivers that worked.

Shit, I think I have done nothing but made things much worse.

1. uninstalled the drivers

2. restarted in safe mode and ran Driver Sweeper and removed all the AMD stuff.

3. restarted pc and downloaded the latest driver from AMD

4. Install but get errors now and can not run the game or MSI stuff at all.

I have done the process a couple times and can not fix the new problems.

Have looked up a couple solutions that others said worked but did not for me.

1. Was told one of the errors stating an INF file was missing could be fixed by just going to

windows live update and there should be an update for Radeon drivers, but there is no such

thing showing up on my live update.

2. Was told to try installing the driver directly through the device manager, tried that but it can not find the driver even though I browse it right to the driver.

Any suggestions? getting 4 errors, posting pics below. One error I did not screen shot is the first one on start-up that says something like "missing display driver wrapper". I should have just left it alone.

Oh, and here is the one I get when ever I try to run any Catalyst control center program..

Ahh yes, I've seen this problem before. It's called an AMD card.

But besides that... try using the original CD that came with that card. Redownload the update from the website, install as admin.

You could also just install the driver and not the suite.

Otherwise, uninstall and sweep all drivers. That means uninstall via control panel first.. and uninstall ALL AMD software. CCC and drivers. Restart PC in normal mode, click start, right click Computer, click manage. Click device manager, right click on your PC name in the right window at the top and Scan for hardware changes. Then try updating your card drivers by selecting it in the devices listed.

Also, WHY Internet Explorer?

I had the exact same problem with my XFX Radeon HD 5770's eventually after game updates and driver updates I think the problem went away, but its a royal pain.

Thats why I'm done with ATI cards. I sticking with nVidia cuz ATI drivers are nasty.

I had a 5770 too! How COOL is that?

But yeah, it was horrible trying to work with that card.

I gave all those suggestions a go and still no luck.

I get same errors.

On one down loader on the AMD autodetect system, It starts the download of the driver and at the very end I get an error saying

"Could not download file. Could not parse error"

I do not have the original CD that came with the card, I did not see anywhere on the net that I can download an original cd and maybe put on a virtual drive.

As for Internet Explorer, I do not use it, it just popped up as a default when I tried to run BF3.

There has been one change since yesterday, Yesterday I could still run Angry birds, Today I can not, I get an error box saying "Texture is too large: 2048 x 2048, maximum supported size: 1024 x 1024"

So things are just getting worse.

Is a system restore to an earlier date even a possibility of a fix here? or will that not work in this case since stuff has been deleted and sweeped?

Try manually choosing the driver to download.

Ya, that is what I have been doing, I thought I would try the Auto detect to see if that would have better luck, It did not.

I am not sure what is going on here. Have no clue what to do now other than give up gaming until I can get a new card or something.

Hell, at this point, I still do not know if my original problem was from a bad card or bad driver.

or if anyone has a suggestion to a site that would be best for posting this issue let me know, Maybe the AMD forums?

Update..

Thanks for that Link Wise, I have read it and wrote down some stuff to try from that post.

Somethning new happened, Just a while ago, after not messing with anything for half the day but watching videos on the PC, I got a little notification popup from the task bar stating that Windows has an important update that I need to download, It is for the ATI Technologies Inc. - Display - AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series

I had done a search in the windows update to look for such a thing but it never found anything. anyway, downloaded it and installed, got the following info below from that...

So just for the hell of it, I tried running Angry birds and it ran fine with no Error. So that is something positive, I uninstalled BF3 earlier so could not test that out.

I have been reading up on a lot of people having serious issues with the new driver so I think I will just leave it alone for now, not even mess with earlier drivers and just wait for 12.3 or what ever then do an update at that time and see if it solves the issues.

Thanks for your help guys, Ill update this post when I decide to tackle it again, For now, after fussing with it for so many hours, I just want to not mess with it right now as I have many other things to take care of.

This Windows update is probably why I was having issues with trying to update the driver again. So I have it now and will wait for 12.3 or better and dive in again, Will post back if it works, or does not work lol.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hey guys, Just for the hell of it, I ran the MSI Kombustor again like in the video I posted higher in this thread, and it ran smooth as hell, no shadow artifacts at all! So I am convinced that it was the P.O.S 12.2 driver.

Next time I play a game and it needs me to update my driver I am using older stable versions such as the 12.1.

No More Auto updates for me on drivers. I will do my homework for now on.
