PC6400.........is this really enough for high OC use?

e.g. pair it with a X6800, and always pushing for high OC, is 6400 enough?

or, best to go for something like PC8000 of higher?
 
Have you bought the x6800 yet? Not sure it is worth it to be honest, e6700's are due a nice price cut in April, also quad cores drop in price at this time...

RAM wise, tbh - I found shelling out for pc8500 to be a bit of a waste, not that much noticable gain...
 
Agreed on the X6800. It doesn't actually offer any more 'guaranteed overclock' than buying something like an e6400 or e6600. Obviously the stock multi is higher so you don't have to rely on decent ram and high fsb board, but atm my fave system would comprise of:

E6400 (almost guaranteed to 3.4ghz @ 425mhz FSB)

Asus Commando (Perfectly capable of well above 425fsb)

OCZ PC2-8000 of sorts (Good up to 500mhz, so running at 1:1 would allow for seriously low timings and also further overclocking/upgrading).

Then spend the money you saved on the X6800 to get yourself some decent cooling, a nice keyboard & mouse..or whatever takes your fancy.
 
My GSkill 6400 RAM ran ok at 450 (900) @ 4-4-4-12 timings. (using a divider)

I am running it at stock atm tho because of clocking my CPU
 
mm......nope, i havent bought the X6800, i was just using it as a example.

i was just asking out of interest......

i've seen results in other forums people using PC8000 ram for their super duper high OC, sure, some did use PC6400 ram for their OC.

i mean......is there really that much difference in these different speed? and for high OC use is PC6400 enough?
 
If you want to get lower rated RAM you could always get a mobo that allows you to run the RAM unlinked such as the DFI iCFX3200 or the abit IN9

I'm guessing that by 3200 you mean 6400?

With DDR2 you wont really get to the point of maxing out most mid+ range memory kits. PC2-6400 will suffice for overclocking but for overall system performance I would go for 8000 +

Noooo... Hey, I don't normally pick faults but Ham was breakin my balls today lol.

Kemp referenced mobo's that cost more than 150, but then Ham said 'or the xxx mobo for those who cant spend < (less than) 150' when in actual fact the mobo is less than 150.

Anyway I was only yankin his chain to get my own back :p

<150 is the same as 150>, both bring less than 150

and >150 is the same as 150<, both being more than 150

ermmm........how do i put this into words.....

mmmmmm........that PC3200 bit, it was a way from me saying like........if i were to run Unlink mode, i can bung in whatever ram i want, and its a exaggreated way of thinking.

say.....i have a X6800, run it in unlink mode, and i bung in [trash can DDR PC3200 ram] and i can still get a sky high OC........

and

if i use the same CPU, but run in linked mode, i should go and get [god chosen DDR800000 PC1bil ram] for god reaching OC

is that right?
 
Not exactly lol, for a start you're going to want DDR2 ram lol, give unlinking memory a quick google
