Is Conroe really that much better?

Hmm interesting, not much you can do really apart from wait and see, i have thought that a lot of the enthusiast excitment about Yonah and Conroe has been about SPi scores, no point in speculating endlessly though, im not even that bothered as i cant afford to change my rig that much anyway.

"Intel had the design, technology, and the means to beat the Athlon 64 family six years ago - they just didn't have the balls to back away from high clockspeeds... This was AMD's saving grace. Now when we look back, we can say that was Intel's big mistake, a chance they failed to take - but they have not missed that chance. The architechture, as it stands, is still more than AMD can face - no DDR2 tack-on will save them - they became complacent, and now K10 is too late - Conroe shall be their complete undoing.

A 3.1Ghz Athlon 64 FX60 gets about 24 seconds in SuperPi, and 3.1ghz conroe gets 16 seconds. That clock-to-clock comparison shows us one thing - AMD's core design is behind by more than six years.

I cannot see a way back for AMD - Intel can run and run with this."

Something interesting I think and looking VERY nice for conroe.

Of course we are hearing a lot of superpi and other such programs - but I think the point being made is that it (spi) does not saturate the cache - the real problem comes for Conroe (allegedly coz I am only going by what other have written) is what happens when that cache is full?

People are saying that the gap is not so great then and in some cases AMD is still faster.

Lest we forget here that AMD is still 90nm and we are talking Intel 65nm parts - which is why I am holding steady until 2007 when true AM2 (65nm, next gen mem controller and more cache) CPU's are released.

Even so - closer the competition (especially now market share is swinging) is only good for consumer prices ;)

I just hope that Conroe is not going to be priced too high. I hope there will be plenty to go around too. Might be a huge shortage when first released.

Is there any info when its actually going to be here? June 06?

The ball seems to be very secure in Intel's corner for the time being. AMD have had the market for us custom builders pretty much since the A64 arrived. They will come back with something like the Conroe, will get us raving about it etc. 65nm AMD cpu's I mean.

On another note... I hope more manufacturers will come out with more Yonah mobo's. We might see a new adapter made by Asus. Who knows. More mobo's for Yonah could also be a big seller, like the Dothans really.

Well July is the release date for Conroe.

I would probs choose Merom over conroe - but still... must ..... resist....... upgrade - til new AMD's come out in 2007 :)

Thats like saying my F1 car will whip ur Porsche 911 - not apples for apples so hardly a comparison.

Who said I wasn't changing? ;)

Plus I only gotta hold it together til 27th July 06 and I been EPUKs fastest for 12months - 9months is a helluva achievement though but I would like to see me get the full 12months in - it's possible that I can do that with what I have now :)
