Is a 430W PSU well suited for overclocking?

Depends on who makes it and what your system specs are. If you're running a solid power supply and not a lot of "extras" then it will be more than enough to pull off a nice overclock.

Now if you're trying to run SLI / CF and whole bunch of fans, lights, watercooling, etc etc then the answer is no, get a bigger supply.

Oh btw, welcome to OC3D!!! :wavey:

Hi ManuelJ and welcome to OC3D :wavey: FragTek is right, it totally depends upon whether your PSU is a no name generic one or a recognised quality brand; and it also depends on whether the voltages it's supplying your system are stable/solid enough. Some of the preferred brand of PSU recommended around here for OCing are Tagan, Enermax, OCZ and PCP&C, because they provide ample stable voltages for OCing on whatever platform you're using. Quite often you'll find generic PSU's don't get even close to the voltages that they state on the side of the case.

Secondly, it totally depends on what your system consists of and what extra 'bits' you have included, as to whether 430W is gonna be suitable. Again, like Frag said if you're wanting to run SLI, a watercooling setup and a whole heap of case bling and fans...then no, you need to upgrade. What brand PSU is it anyway mate?

ya same as the 2 posts above depends on how much on it and brand i have a 460 enermax whisperquiet and it runs more stable then the 550 watt no name psu.

My Specs:

AMD Athlosn 64 3200+ OC @ 2.3GHz

Epox EP-9NPA Ultra+ Mobo

Samsung SP1213C 120GB 7200rpm 8MB SATA-150 HD

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB DDR400 (PC 3200)

Thermaltake TR2 430W PSU

NEC DVD Burner

Antec SLK3000-B Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Case

Asus Geforce 6600 256MB DDR PCI-E OC @ 415/600

I had some guy tell me on another forum that my PSU was inadequate to run a PCI-E system and that the overclocking wasn't helping either. Today was my first time applying Arctic Silver on my CPU and Video Card. It went well with the CPU but with the VD the layer wasn't neatly crafted as shown on the website. I tried not to let it aproach the edges of the core so it wouldn't ooze out and hurt the circuitry. The amount applied was adequate though. I'm also going to add an extra 120mm fan(already got one on the back) and a 80mm fan for the side duct. What do you think?

Oh, on another note, would it matter if I raise the video card heatsink just to look at how the AS spread through the core? Can I do this withe the cpu also?

I'm not a big fan of TT PSU's personally; plus they state that it's a 430W but when you add the voltages it's technically 388W (+ 5 V x 30 A = 150 W + 12 V x 18 A = 216 W + 5 V x 0.5 A = 2.5 W + 12 V x 0.8 A = 9.6 W + 5 V x 2 A = 10 W). This is only the nominal power supply too. I'd say that the PSU will be enough...just!!! You would be better investing in another PSU imho.

As far as checking out your AS application on both GFX and CPU, I wouldn't as you will destroy the molecular bonding that the thermal paste has formed already. Bearing in mind that it takes around 200 hours to cure properly (if I remember correctly), so if you've just applied it then you should be fine.

If I were you I'd invest in a solid new PSU mate. Why spend all that money, scrimp on one of the most important parts and then have it all end in tears?

Okay I checked the GPU and it looks perfect! I'm confident about the CPU so I'm not going to bother. About adding the fans what's your opinion?

I'll keep that in mind :)

You could just try it and find out?

If it give crappy resaults get a new one. Assuming your 3200 is venice you should look at ~2.5/2.6 as a nice, stable overclock.

Time for a new PSU mate. TT PSU's are infamous for being complete crap and killing more expensive parts in your computer. As earlier stated by others, some good brands to check out are Tagan, OCZ, PCP&C, and Enermax.

ok so considering I might upgrade my video card in the future and continue my overclocking activities, what would you recommend(something affordable please :))?

And thanks to all for your help..I appreciate it.

What sort of budget are you on? There's plenty of v.good PSU's to be had around the £80 mark.

id go with a enermax iv had my 460 for a while and saved me tons of cash befor it i was suffering from surges and blowing mobos right and left.

Actually, I did a small review on this PSU and it was very good!

http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=4612

You can see the review there. It powered a much more powerful system than yours (this had a 7800GT, 3500+, LED lights everywhere, etc) fine! It was my buddies PC and my PSU. We used it to play NFS:MW for about 6 hrs straight.. and after that the PSU was still pushing barely warm air out. It had suprisingly stable rails, too.
