I personally think it's a good idea. You could get her learning to touch type from a very young age and she could whiz through her coursework when she gets older then.

If you wanted to, you could just set up a network and only allow access to all the sites that the school she currently attends allows. This would help her a lot I think. These stupid educational laptops aren't worth the money in my opinion. Get either that little computer you're thinking of, or a nice Laptop.

Hope I've helped slightly.. lol

I'd say get her the computer.

I used a pc from a young age (around 4 IIRC), and the stuff you learn is invaluable now. I agree on the limited net usage, I just used to have stuff like encarta and word for doing educational stuff.

I was occasionally allowed on the net, but back then it cost 1p a minute to be on :P

Certainly go for a computer. There's soooo much educational software now a days. If you need any advice on them, let me know as i work with it everyday.

a bit of software we use that i can sort you out with is lanschool.

Cheers dude that looks like it may be handy.

its a good idea for sure. Its proven to improve hand to eye coordination amongst other things (using a mouse etc) and it would be a fun learning platform. The youngsters in our family actaully look forward to interacting and learning on the computer and actually ask to do it (and moan if they can't). Compare that with sitting a kid down infront of a book or some spelling cards and they feel pressured into doing it - exact opposite with a pc mate. Even better if the kid has pc use in school which all of them do nowadays as confidence at school with these subjects will be good.

I can remeber sitting with my little bro and watching him play 'Things To Do In Busy Town' :D I enjoyed watching him learn, have fun and grow into an intelligent and pc literate young man. Your concerns with internet safety etc are reassuring as well so go for it.

My little brother had one since last christmas, he is now 5 and he loves it. He plays on the cbeebies website and he is not the best in the class at using them and shows all the others when they are stuck. It's educational games too so it helps him learn, but he is still having fun.

or when they get to the age and you get back a school report like my sons.

Excellent at ICT and has even solved some hardware issues that we had on some computers before the ICT engineer had come and confined every thing Thomas had said was correct. We how ever would like to talk to you about some issues we have had with Thomas getting around our proxy servers to play Mafia wars on face book and all so gaining local admin rights to the schools pc's. Please arrange an appointment with !!! ect ect.

That was direct off his school report we had last Friday.

Wow, we do that all the time at school and never get in trouble o.0

And we do it in the face of the teacher lol!

well its life but they are there for your protection and for the schools protection sorry but did not find it funny with my son and wouldn't find it funny if i was his or your IT tekkie ...

They are there for a reason and ppl should not even try to get around them, that is what a home pc is for.

Sorry to sound fuddy duddy but in the past i had to fix things like this when a virus had entered a blue chip company and i didn't find it funny at all then. 28 hrs of none stop work running round like a pillock and getting shouted at because there pc's are not up and running is no joke.

maybe its just my age or maybe its because ive been on the receiving end of it...

Crap, I voted yes but I meant no :p

Me and my brother shared a PC in our room when I was about 7-8.. No internet until I was about 13, and that was just to play mostly CS 1.6 and MSN :).

U shouldn't.

U may not appreciate it, but the rules and safeguards are there for a reason.

Nathan would need to verify this, but they're almost 100% not in place to stop u having fun or anything, they're there as safeguards in part to keep the internet in the school.

(if I include "black-tape" within the reply for no apparent reason, nat should see this :p)

I fully support circumventing the schools filter. Ours is rediclous.

You can get on www.labourlist.org but not on anti-labour blogs. You can get on some email providers, and not on others.

The filtering is rediculouse and biased.

I understand safeguards are there but safeguards go too far alot of the time.

filters are not usually in the schools control. You normally have a consortium providing internet/filtering and in some places email.

the provider here in the east midlands is EMBC, and they are crap most of the time. Some primary schools are paying £6000 a year.

+1.

+ the other filter on the school systems which the school actually has control over.
