iPhone 5 - Owners Club

So happy to finally have it. Not touching it until I have a screen protector xD.

Wow... iPhone noobs thinking they need a screen protector.

I've had the iPhone since the first iteration. I can see using a screen protector in the 2G up to the 3GS, but the 4, 4S and 5 do not require a protector.

I've thrown my 4S in my pocket with keys, ran a knife across the screen, slid it along the ground and it doesn't have a single scratch.

Here's the bottom line: The more scratch resistant, the more brittle (chance to shatter). We can't have both.

I very much doubt that.

Ok, i'm just gonna go out on a limb and say that's hugely exaggerated. I highly doubt the screen could survive a knife being sliced across the screen and it sliding across the ground, let alone being scratch free. And i'm not sure why you'd do it anyway

I've had a screen protector and a case on my 4s since launch day, still in mint condition. I don't put nothing else in one of my pockets if my phone is in there

Please don't talk shite. 4 and 4s both scratched to shit.

When it comes to Apple's peripherals, i'm not sure you can get much worse build quality.

I've never had anything I've ever bought from Apple die on me.

I've owned:

iBook G4 12"
Powerbook 15"
MacBook Pro 17" x2 (Classic style and Unibody)
Airport Express Router (still going strong 7 years after purchase!)
Airport Extreme Router
iPad 2
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4S
iPhone 5

About 3 sets of headphones, two iPhone docks, 3 power bricks and a 30" DVI to Mini-Display Port adapter.

Literally none of this stuff is broken. I've always been really happy with the build quality. Heck my 17" MacBook Pro is coming up on 4 years old right now and the battery still gives me 2.5 Hours and its way over the amount of Cycles Apple suggested it would last to.

Maybe I'm lucky, maybe I just take care of my stuff but I really feel their stuff including the peripherals are well made but I'm not suggesting other companies aren't at the same level. I have products from Dell, Logitech, Asus, Samsung etc that have all lasted just as long as my Apple gear. I'm merely suggesting Apple isn't worse than the competition in my own personal usage.

The iPhone 5 scratching problem is a real low point for Apple, I really think they should have stuck with steel as my iPhone 4S never scratched, sure I was careful with it but I feel as if I need to be even more careful with my iPhone 5 as that aluminum back is coming in to contact with a lot of surfaces where as the glass on the iPhone 4S felt more resistant to scratching.

I think that, for the most part, Apple products have good build quality, but i'm only referring to their main line of products, not the accessories and titbits.
I've got through 3 of their keyboards, two of their Airport Expresses and all but two of the stock Apple Earphones have issues.
Also, their chargers are appalling quality - for my 17" MacBook Pro i've needed to order two replacements, just because the plastic they use crumbles so easily.

But, as you've been lucky, I may have been equally unlucky.

The earbuds are ATROCIOUS. Absolutely AWFUL build, worse sound and whats better?... the price.

I agree they do not sound good. I find them very heavy on the bass and it sometimes sounds like.. you know when you have speakers and you turn the volume up too loud and it starts to distort? The earbuds sound like that to me, except the volume isn't loud even at 40% volume on my iPhone 5 they sound very distorted. I don't think they are faulty just poorly designed.

I think its a combination of crap headphones that would probably cost 2 quid if they didn't have an apple logo on them and the fact its coming from a phone without a DAC.

Ouch, there hasn't been a whole lot of love for Apple in this thread! I should say that I'm an Android man anyway and that stemmed from hating itunes when I first tried it...ugh file conversion/protection...

I've been using a gmail account for so many years that it just made sense to go android (samsung galaxy nexus) and I love that pretty much everything is attached to one account - gmail, gcontacts, gcalendar, drive (as opposed to dropbox), chrome and so on all require a single log in regardless of what form of pc I log in on to use. Of course I'm fooked if something goes wrong...

There's no question that I consider Apple to be a massively innovative and world leading company particularly in smart phones, tablets (which actually I can't personal find use for) and software. But I also think that they massively take the piss sometimes. This is otherwise known as having good marketing obviously. I've seen some unimpressive build quality on Apple products, particuarly accessories and everything is so...well overpriced.

I helped my gf look for a new laptop last year and settled on an Vaio with i5 and 1gb dedicated vram. It cost £850. The equivilent laptop from Apple cost £2k. WTF. I can understand why certain business people and artists or designers (who use certain programs which have been developed for OSX) choose Apple but for 90% of the market who just buy a laptop for browsing/email/youtube/watching films and the odd office document I think it's totally rediculous.

Speaking of all this I think I'm going to try and download ubuntu onto my phone.
