Intel is now rumoured to release 6-core Kaby Lake R-series CPUs in early 2018.

Better late than never. Mind you, new socket new board. Ugh.

What would have been the best thing to do would be to release a six core CPU that works in 270 and 170 boards. But then *sigh* this is Intel and not AMD.

That's what makes me laugh the most though. Obviously Intel can't just shove a 6 core in there* which means that they really did expect Zen to be crap and really did, totally, 100% get caught with their pants down.

That's one of the main reasons I went with Zen, So I can just drop in the next big AM4 CPU instead of buying a completely new board

The article is wrong, or rather it's a misunderstanding that's been taken for a spin; nothing changed and we'll still have CFL-S K-Series come August. From the guy who leaked the original Core X series:

The original article from WinFuture.de only provides info about mobile products and a 65W 'S' part (and speculates about the rest), saying Kaby Lake Refresh comes in September, Gemini Lake in late 2017 and Coffee Lake in February. Basically nothing new because it was already known that mobile Coffee Lake was a Q1-2018 product. To clear up any confusion, the only parts launching in August are unlocked 65W/95W 4C/6C desktop models + Z370 chipset, everything else including traditional locked 65W desktop models, mobile variants (U, H), Xeon E3 and new chipsets will only be available next year. This is the latest roadmap from Intel itself pre-Computex:
