Intel Xeon 2697 V2 24 Core 48 Thread Madness Review

My dangly bits tingled during the Cinebench run :cool:
Highest score i've had on my 2500k is about 7.9 and that took a good 30secs, maybe more to complete the render test.

I would love to have two of these Xeons but 1. I can't afford them and 2. I have no use for them anyway, so it would be a waste.
I still want them though!! :D
 
I would love to see you guys putting Ubuntu on this rig and running The Phoronix Test Suite. Get all of those cores up and running. Running a desktop OS on this rig may be selling it short.

Thinking about it the test suite is something you guys might want to look into as it can running on Windows and automates benchmarks and might become a tool that could be used across the board.
 
I'm a virtualisation consultant and we generally only buy Xeons, and while these are a 'headline' product for Intel very few will be sold simply because their $/£-per-core cost is disproportionately high compared to the ten-core E5-2670 v2 or E5-2680 v2. That said it's always nice to see a company pushing the envelope and of course in about five years our phones will have many cores :)
 
I love these overkill3D videos/reviews, so much power, so little reason for almost anyone to buy.

A good watch and read all the same.

I'll actually be getting myself a new Workstation at work soon with 2 Xeon E5-2687W V2's for a total of 32 threads. Insane, but not as insane as 48.
 
Oh my <3. I really wish dual cpu configs were affordable. They look amazing. That price/gaming performance is hilariously bad but to be fair xeons aren't for gaming at all.

Agreed. I was shopping around for a Xeon proc for a low power VMWare server I'm putting together. This...would definitely have been out of the question, not to mention the huge dent in the electricity bill on top of the price! But the cores! :sad:

Finally the rig is running. Please please install Linux Ubuntu for F@H. Without Linux you don't get big WUs and therefor PPD falls drastically.

I can't believe that this system actually came close to my old Server!

I knew though that you'd have problems with OCCT. Most programs are 32Bit and you can see it because they only support 32 cores/threads.

I think you can get to about 500k PPD with that system if you set it up in Ubuntu. If you need help or advice, PM me. I might be one of the few people on this forum who's used 48 cores/threads for F@H

I wonder why it beat my system in wPrime with 32M

EVGA SR2 with two xeon x56xx @4,5 you can reach around 23 in cinebench. This shows that 2011 platform is pretty bad compared to 1366.
 
I just wanted to let you know something. I think you didn't have all threads running with Cinebench 11.5. My system even in 64Bit started automatically with 32 threads in the settings. I had to manually change that to get to 48.

I also only count 32 treads. I think your score ought to be closer to 32 points!
 
In regards to Toms comment about multi threading and gaming with 48threads.. i wonder if running Mantle with this rig would improve game performance? Now its doubtfull but it would be cool to just try:p

No, because no game would be designed around 48 threads - not only that but it isn't easily scalable unlike GPGPU threading models.

Obviously but i thought it would be worth a try just to see if it really does do anything at all. Even if the engine made use of even 1 more thread i wonder what it would do to performance. Now i know it won't be much but could try BF4 pretty quickly to see. Or even the StarSwarm demo from steam.

When I saw the video I came to think (since I have the same board) the ppd-score is great (mine is at ~85k ppd just using both cpus but I just started and haven't done more than 10 WUs so far). But on the other hand when folding with only the gpu I get ~150k ppd in my current status. So I came to think that if the rig is just going to be for folding (if I got it right) wouldn't it make more sense to slam in multiple graphics cards i.e. R9 290(X) and replace the Xeons with smaller ones just to be able to populate all PCIE-slots?
If I understood correctly my ppd are going to rise when I finished more than 10 WUs since my system is qualified for greater WUs giving more credits so just using my one gpu in theory I should outperform this monster.
Surely it will have to be seen if and how much there will be a difference and what the ratio between ppd and power consumption will be achieved in the end to tell for sure but I just wanted to have this thoughts experiment.
Maybe I'm even not seeing something critical which needs to be also kept in mind.
Since the Xeons don't get that warm and thus the rigs stays very quiet it would be a hassle to get the same rig stuffed with multiple gpus to be that quiet as well but hey... Where's the fun if there weren't any challenges? ^_^
 
My uni is still running i5 650's for 3D work, granted we're mostly using realtime shaders so GPU's are handy, but man i would kill to use this setup for more complex modelling.
