More new toys for me to buy and not make use of
My i7 920 doesnt break into a sweat as it is. No game i currently play makes use of 4 cores. Even fsx which was supposed to be multi threaded and use multiple cores. Only ever saw it load 2 and then it was to 40% on one and 25% on another.
Ahh well its not aimed at gamers anyways to be honest

I'd prefer to be alive when it does nat.
Only way I can see these multicores and multigpu setups working out, is to take the thought away from the programmers and just have the "behind the scenes" stuff do all the core sharing. (and I don't mean like the present xx% max job u can do today)
When did the first multicore cpu come out, and we're still waiting for mainstream use.
Computer tech failed when it abandoned proper multitasking for "as many hertz as u can pump into an 8086" 20 or so years ago. And we still aint caught up with it's efficiency. But hey, big corps made their monies

Sources close to Intel say the company will release a 6-core Nehalem derivative in roughly the same timeframe as its upcoming Lynnfield processors.
According to sources close to Intel, the company is planning to release a six-core Nehalem processor in roughly the same timeframe as the big Lynnfield/P55 release scheduled for later this year.
Our sources said that the new chip will drop into existing X58/LGA1366 motherboards with a BIOS update. We’re told that most board manufacturers have already added support, so unless you’re running an outdated BIOS release, there’s no need to worry about whether your board will work with the new chip or not.
It will sit alongside the Core i7 975 on this platform as Intel plans to discontinue every other Core i7 CPU later this year. What was interesting though was that the new chip apparently won’t fit under the Core i7 moniker. When probed, the sources said that Intel hadn’t finalised the name for this chip but were fairly certain that it wouldn’t fall under the i7 brand.

the 6 core will be a extreme edition until next year that way intel gets 1000quid a processor from people with more money than sense lol

yeah they do but i know a couple of people who have them and run them at stock even though they paid a grand for em

I was thinking of upgrading my cpu to an I7, then Intel come out with all this about new chips coming out later this year and stopping production of the I7 chips! So will they really be out later this year and will they be affordable? If I get an I7 now, will I be wasting my money because it will soon drop in price, or be obsolete as soon as I get it?
This is starting to get on my t1ts! Fair doe's to Intel for developing their chips, but they really need to sort out their naming structures and prices for more than 5 minutes at a time. If it is all designed just bury AMD completely, then they are doing a good job, but do they need to put concrete on top of the grave as well?

You get loads of bang for your buck, BUT, the prospect of it being obsolete in 3 months time, or that I could get a 6 core monster which is as fast as the unaffordable 955 chip is now for around the same price as a current 920 is enough to put the brakes on me a bit, at least until a bit more is known and confirmed about the new line up.

agreed. I just got tired of waiting and made the choice to buy. I got the 920 for 265.00 usd knowing I would upgrade in 2010. Almost went for the 965 but at 1,000 could upgrade later. did not mean to ruffle feathers with my first post

the point is the 6 core will be a extreme edition for a while yet meaning you have to pay big bucks for it so a quad will more than last till the six core's are cheaper, intel did the same thing with quads and will do the same with the six core because there is no need to rush because there is no competition, core 2 quad outperforms phenom 2, let alone a i7
