Intel super processor Xeon Phil

This might be old news but I didn't find anything on here, so here goes.

Intel are to make a 50 core Xeon super chip called the Xeon Phil.

"Intel’s Xeon chips rule the Top500 list, but Intel is now cooking up a new processor that’s specially made for supercomputers. That chip, which Intel named Xeon Phi on Monday, will have more than 50 processor cores and should be capable of doing 1 trillion calculations per second when it starts shipping later this year."

Imagine the PPD on this chip O..O

I thought they'd already announced a 90+ core chip a little while back?

And, when you think about it, don't GPUs have thousands of cores, just they're not that powerful by themselves?

Could be completely and utterly wrong here

Still, very impressive, and like the others have said, it'd be interesting to see what PPD this could produce.

it's true GPUs have MANY! cores, but they are micro cores which operate at a tiny frequency, from what I gather these will run at a reasonable frequency per core.

nice.

i give it 10 years before we see similar processors inside desktops,

and all our kids will be laughing at us when we are telling them about us trying to reach 5ghz on a quad core.

lol 10 years... you're so incorrect, the arch of that chip is probably complete garbage and they're probably trying to fix it, no pics no proof and why would they release this in 10 years Xeons hold all 10 spots in best processors out right now up to this second then the 3960X is under them

So just to re-cap what you put.
Intel have purposely designed a shit Architecture for this 50 core.... highly unlikely lol. And it was clear he meant 50 cores not this exact chip.

Nvidia is going to have a challenge on there hands. This card is designed to do what Nvidia Tesla cards do.
You mean this CPU. Nvidia seem to be focused on making many less powerful cores in CPUs where as I assume Intel will aim to keep all cores at a reasonable frequency to keep performance at an all time high.

This was designed to do exactly what Nvidia tesla cards do, which is crunch nimbers.

Yea, just you said "this card" last time, except it's not a card, it's a processing chip. I know what you mean though, its brute force processing to process many teraflops of data and not to play games etc. However in the future Intel may use this to help them make a 50 core consumer chip which can do all of the other stuff with a decent instruction set.

What, I think you are thinking of something else. It is indeed a card (http://develop3d.com/images/articles_fullwidth/Intel_Xeon_Phi_PCIe_Card2.jpg)
