Intel set to stop overclocking on mainstream Nehalems

Its been reported today that Intel are going to change their overclocking policy when they move away from their LGA775 platform and release their upcoming generation of Nehalem processors.

For more info, read the full news article.

article isnt up yet, but this looks interesting :)

i get the feeling this will force 50% of people who buy low end chips for overclocking to move back to amd (a good thing) and the other 50% to wait a bit longer and buy a more expensive chip...

that would be a very very very wrong decision coming from Intel. tbh we buy cheap cpus and overclock them so we dont have to buy more expensive ones, not vice versa.

Yep that'd be a pretty bad move if they did this. I think they've got it worked out pretty well at the moment tbh. Release the expensive chips first, those that can afford them buy them, those that cant hold on for the lower-end ones.

We may see a comeback from AMD at this rate. ;)

Awesome article Bungy!

Ta muchly mate.

I just think it's ridiculously stupid... Its not as if they don't get plenty of sales from their whole range. If they were only selling their cheaper CPU's then it might make a little sense but that isn't the case.

I honestly don't understand it.. If it's true that is.

that.

I won't be buying one if you can't OC, I guess the top chip will be anywhere between £700-£1000 judging by previous models... Guess I'll stick with 775 and get a cheap qx9650!

This better not be true.

I was waiting for you to roll up in here...

Pretty much what I expected to be honest... A few lil cussing smilies.

Well hopefully they will consider the equivalent to something like a Q6600 as high end so they wont be locked.

It does all depend on what they consider to be high end and whether they really do want to commit comercial suicide :p.

I know, I knew those that know me would expect that reaction but c'mon t'fook! It's an OC'in forum... This announcement goes against all I stand for!

This is seriously bad news if it turns out to happen that way. TBH I think reserving a seperate socket for the best proccys isn't the best plan of action anyway- and disabling enthusiast features on the lower ones is like adding insult to injury. AMD this is your chance!

There is a bright side, AMD can fill the holes that Intel makes (and vice verse later on maybe...), so if one company start acting like :cussing: the other can step up.

Then again it might not even come to fruition, or they might limit the real low end forcing i.e. below current Q6600/E7xx, as someone already mentioned, or they could just be testing the waters haha

Bad Intel for thinking like this :nono:

Just as I move from amd after 5 years to Intel because of the good OC of the Intel CPU's this happens lol. I hope this benefits AMD in the long run.

But in all fairness if this happens then only the people with lots of money will be able to afford a n overclockable Intel CPU. If its anything like their Extreme CPU's at the moment the CPU prices will be too expensive. We will see what happens.

LOL Good ol Intel fanboys

Since when has Intel supported overclocking? As I recall Intel only allows overclocking of their Extreme Edition CPUs. That hasn't stopped anyone from overclocking all their cheaper processors, and I don't see how it will be any different with Nehalem.

Secondly, no one has conclusive evidence about chip SKUs. This is only my opinion, but I would suspect there will only be an Extreme Edition chip for the LGA1366 socket. This socket is the server socket.

Intel replaced the FSB with the QPI, and most likely once people adjust and motherboard manufacturers figure out the tricks, overclocking the QPI to raise the CPU frequency should become commoneplace regardless of CPU or socket. The only thing this article means to me is that only the Extreme Edition Nehalem will have an unlocked multiplier.... again that is nothing new. :)
