Intel reveals their sped up M15 series of Optane storage drives

I think it would be pretty cool if laptop makers would introduce this. A low cost option for mass storage but still very fast speeds. Would be great for people who want 1/2TB of storage.

You mean like, 1TB SSD or HDD along this Optane drive?

Yes that is exactly what he/she was referencing. Optane with a 1 or 2 (or higher) TB HDD would make them pretty quick indeed. Plus optane is cheap enough to where it actually would make perfect sense = you get capacity and speed but the price is roughly the same as an SSD (lower capacity then 1tb mind you, probably 256gb max).

IMO mechanical drive in any form, optane-assisted or not, is a poor choice for a laptop. Its power consumption is high, it's slow (and laptops get rebooted often, or at least resumed from hibernation) and prone to mechanical failure(again, especially in laptops since they're being moved around).
Alongside an SSD, well, the extra speed isn't that noticeable and it's an additonal component consuming power. Buying a larger SSD at the saved cost is probably the better option.

That's what confuses me about the comment. :P
