Intel has revealed 34 new Gold/Platinum server CPUs, which will use the companies new Skylake-SP "Purley" Platform.

In server land you need as many cores as you can possibly get because Intel encourage it. As such the software usually works with it well.

Unlike the desktop market, where £200+ for four cores keeps them in champagne and caviar.

Yeah it's daft that. Very daft considering AMD will probably release three that will cover the entire market section. Intel may not be smoking weed but they're certainly portioning it out

You mist remember that AMD's R7 1800X consumes similar power to Intel 6900K in most situations (95W VS 140W). AMD and Intel do not use the same standard to measure their TDP.

AMD has higher efficiency, more cores/threads and tends to draw similar or less power, or at least the Ryzen 5 chips I've seen reviews report less power draw than say the Intel 7400/7600k. It's just a huge feat for them when looking at the grand scheme of things. I won't be surprised if this 32 core is as efficient as a package but with a little more cores
