Intel retires Kaby Lake-X less than a year after its release

I would like to know how many did they sell (if any). And i don't mean in pre-built systems, when you go and pick whole case from the shelf. How many people said "I want that CPU" and bought it.

"Today I will buy an over priced chip on an over priced board, most of which I won't be able to use properly".

Not many..

There HAD to have been a sound reason for doing this in the first place. Do companies worth billions really make such stupid mistakes? I don't know whether that's a rhetorical question or not.

Really makes you wonder doesn't it? You'd LIKE to think companies this big GOT this big because they're being run by intelligent people, but sometimes I wonder too!

They made it for overclockers. It was all but guaranteed 5ghz, and that's a number Intel had been chasing for years. Especially since AMD did it first.

Well, I guess that makes sense. I can see their reasoning. Still a stupid idea, but I'm saner knowing that there was a reason other than, 'why not?'

IDK any one who bought one. Maybe pro overclockers got them? IDK. It was £250 extra for the board and chip which meant it wasn't worth it. Plus they did not have full functionality either in X299 which made it all rather stupid. But yeah, deffo Intel flexing muscles. Fair play to them though, 5ghz is no mean feat !

I saw one modder who builds show piece systems use the 7740X or whatever it was called, but that's the only time I've ever seen one in the wild.

5Ghz really isn't that big of a deal any more. I know some programs benefit from it, as do games, but these days it seems easier to add more cores and develop your software for that, at least with the Infinity Fabric technology. We've had 8 cores since the 5960X, but they were prohibitively expensive. Now we have that level of horsepower (minus 200Mhz) for a third of the price and with room to grow. X99 only offered the 5960X and then the 6950X, which added two more cores, lowered the clock speeds, and increased the price by €600.

Good post and well said.

You are trying to apply common sense to a childish company with bragging rights at stake... :D
