Intel or AMD - With a Twist

the whole world agrees that AMD are currently betetr than intel, if we get into a debate about that, ill ban you, thats no what this thread is for :D

my question to you sx'ers, is how much trouble have you had with AMD over Intel.

Personally, I never had one problem with Intel, as soon as I went AMD, it all started and hasnt stopped since. I am again without a computer, my next upgrade, ecven if its a downgrade will be intel, ive decided.

I know XMS has had more trouble with AMD, as has Kemp, whos rig breaks almost as much as mine. Frag will just blow up anything in his path so he may be exempt.

Many people I know get comp troubles with AMD when they switch. I wanna know your opinions. The performance issue is in AMD's favour, but certainly not without the hassle I tell thee.

IMO Intel rigs are far more reliable. Its not just coincidense why almost all businesses use Intel for their desktops and servers.

AMD has many advantages, such as superior performance, cool operation temps, cheaper - but so far (imo) they have never made a chip as reliable as an Intel.

Hmm I dunno. I have trouble but only with that crappy Ballistix RAM dying on me. I've had 5 AMD rigs and only set up two Intels.

AMD's are more picky but they are MUCH faster in games. My friend's P4 @ stock gets its ass handed to it compared to even my old Venice @ stock.

Overclocking I've only really done with AMD's and usually I have to say probems are my own fault generally by pushing too far. I mean I've never really broke an AMD setup - they get sorted eventually :)

I'd like to have a play with a decent Intel Setup to see what I think but from what I've seen with my mates HT P4 I'm certainly not missing much this gen

If i'm honest, i saw very little (maybe no) difference between my P4 @ 4.6ghz and my Opty @ 3ghz fps wise.

And that was moving from an AGP to a PCI-E platform as well (both had 6800GT).

P4's are insanely easy to overclock too.

Ye I heard they were. Like I said I would like to play with one :)

But my mate has a cheap P4 (same as my Venice 3200+ by price) and it really was slower...you could feel it

However until I've played with a good P4 I'm not in a place to comment :)

Enuf performance talk. Thats not wot im askin i made that clear. Intel are behind perfrmance wise but reliability counts for a lot. After this comp has blown again im tempted to cut my losses now and get a p4. Is lga775 around for a while yet?

Prices are different enough for intels now that a comparable cpu to amd cpu the intel will win after clocking.

LGA775 works amazingly well and has been around for quite a while.

There's a reason I chose Intel when it came to my mums new work computer. I even squeezed 200mhz out of it using ALL bargain bin parts. She has yet to have a single problem with and lets me know how much she loves it all the time.

But I think if we start discussing AMD vs Intel not overclocked theyre both very stable platforms. I have never had a single problem with any of my AMD rigs that I didn't overclock, just as stable as any Intel rig out there. And when it comes to business computing, etc I don't think they oc they're machines ;) Once in to the overclocking arena however Intels fair much better with less tweaking than the AMD's, definately a superior chip in the reliability arena.

Thats the other thing with intel. DDR2 is so cheap and performs so well with intel's that a $30 512mb stick can do 350fsb.

I've never had an ounce of bother with either platform...just fortunate I guess. I still have my S478 P4 2.8c @ 3.5Ghz and it performs flawlessly (F@H and occasional CS:S), although admittedly, not quite as punchy as my S939 3500+ @ 2.6Ghz Winnie setup. My new rig (once I get the GC's) is X2 dual core, I'll let you know how it goes. I'll prolly have a heap of trouble now rofl. But I definitely agree with XMS...Intel is deffo the easier to overclock.

Well like I said I've had no experience with OC'ing Intels but if I leave an installation at stock then I have no problems at all. The ballistix I had has problems but actually building and installing an AMD rig creates no problems at all and having built several stock AMD's and a couple of stock P4 setups I see no difference in stability :)

Well, unfortunately I've had no real experience with Intel, only basic crap pre-made rigs (Sony, Compaq, eMachines). However, I've barely had any problems with my current AMD rig, and those I have had were my own doing from my lack of knowledge (n00bness ;) )
