Intel Corp., the world’s largest maker of microprocessors and chipsets, is looking for a specialist to develop future “high performance graphics” technologies. While the company does not define for what project it needs the additional staff, it may be suspected that the company is increasing the number of specialists to work on a discrete graphics processing unit (GPU), or a graphics core integrated into a central processing unit (CPU).

Looks like... Nvidia could be in deep s--t soon.. with no intel and nvidia merger.

I dont think so mate - the technology they are using is the super tiling as used in old PowerVR chipsets - what it will do is allow Intel to still have good (but not ground breaking) chipsets with onboard GPU.

Looking ahead the future is cell processing where a processor will probably have 3 or 4 dedicated Processing units for differents tasks (physics, graphics, CPU, sound).

One of the best alliances I could see Nvidia making now is with Creative and possibly Ageia.

What would the advantages in your eyes to make it such a good alliance? I can see the increased size possibly being an advantage for raising cash, but what else did you have in mind?

How would the alliance with Creative help with that?

I think Nvidia could come up with a better phsyics solution without Ageia personally, though the physics market is very green, so there is still a lot to play out before mergers need to be considered.

I think there are two/three things to consider when we talk about such things.

Firstly - creative bring with it a host of multimedia packages where I am sure some GPU or chipset magic could bring forward more concept ideas and innovative products in that arena.

Cell technology with GPU, Physics and sound in one chipset - especially as AMD move toward co-processing.

And as Master G said - financially it will be a stronger company and prevent any hostile take-overs that could occur in either compnaies current form.

There is a good chance that Ageia have strong employees high up in the company who nVidia would benefit from having. If this wasn't the case nVidia would have come up with what Ageia have or better...

Well i didnt think the ATI AMD merger would ever happen, so i could be wrong on this one too, but i see less good reasons this time. I can see Creative's expertise on sound possibly helping with a chipset, but apart from that i see them as very seperate markets.

ATI and AMD were both fighting a big rival and both wanting similar technology (process size shrinks), and the AMD chip-fabs offered quicker access to shrinks than ATI could have got before.

I dont see such benefits for Creative, they have no big rival on the soundcard side of things, they dont need to rush after process shrinks and so forth.

As for Ageia, if they have good employees then im sure Nvidia or ATI could poach them with better offers. I think Nvidia would compete with them first before going down the merger route, it has to be said that Ageia's first offering is less than stunning, i cant imagine the sales being much better than that given the feedback from all the reviews. I would guess that a buyout might happen just to eliminate the competition from the market and to poach them employees, but i dont think it would be a merger like AMD and ATI's with each side remaining with a different name etc.

Just my musings on the subject anyway, im no analyst on this subject.

I dont disagree.

However think outsdie the box - sound and graphics go together nicely in a plethora of goodies now, wireless multimedia is the future.

On their own creative and nvidia are vulnerable - together, they dont necessarily have to be joined at thew hip, but collectively they would be market leaders in sound and vision - Add ULI into the mix and Ageia (onboard physix anyone) and you have a very strong brand, market presence and route to market.

Interesting point there Mav, less synergies than the ATI and AMD, but they could still create an allround multimedia solution.
