Intel is reportedly creating higher clocked version of their Kaby Lake CPUs to combat AMD's upcoming Ryzen CPU lineup.

Rather more they are simply producing hardware overclocked versions and looking at those specs see nothing to shout about 100Mhz gain more heat on already hot CPUs

they are probably cherrypicking the production lines for cpus that can do good overclocks.. This is stupid... They are going to release an 4.6GHZ K cpu (the other K cpus coud do that just fine manually) and charge a huge amount of money for it...


Only "reasonable" thing for them to do is release the 5GHz version... However when amd did that it was well nearing the architecture's end of life...

What would excite me more than a 100Mhz speed boost is a more efficient thermal compound between the die and the heatspreader. Delidders have been going to town with Kaby Lake. I saw one guy who (rather oddly) replaced his 4.9Ghz 6700K (1.45v) to a 7700K at 5.2Ghz (1.38v) that ran hotter despite the lower voltages. Voltages aren't everything—and why you'd replace a 6700K with a 7700K is dumb in itself—but the temperatures put me off as a potential buyer. Fix the the thermals, reduce the price, and you'll have a competitive CPU. Then fast track Coffee Lake 6-cores on 14nm.

You don't even need a brain. Most motherboards set to auto oc will get more than that

It must Suck to be a 7600K buyer reading this.

It will suck to any one who buys a CPU now. In fact it will suck for any one who bought a CPU post AMD's Ryzen demo. It's either people who would never buy an AMD CPU no matter how good or impatience. Either way, their hardware will drop in price tenfold after the launch of Ryzen.

I have had my 5820k coming up two years this summer so I don't feel bad but god, if I bought Kaby I would be gutted.

Yup but that doesn't matter because it's AMD and AMD don't count.

In my latest PC mag there is a whole page with some one ranting on about how Intel have released CPUs that do 5ghz like AMD don't even exist.

But hey, we know why they are doing it right? if not I will tell you. Because they know that right now most games etc only support 4 cores. So if they release a 5ghz CPU then every one will be fooled into thinking it's faster than AMD's 8 core running around 3.8ghz.

Of course it won't be. Ryzen will murder it in anything threaded, but they will fool plenty of people.

I really hope this blows up in their face and devs start supporting higher thread loads.

It will come with a 360 AIO to keep it cool, Could just be Intel getting the rumours out so people don't go buying Ryzen. It would seem Intel may be a little worried about Ryzen after all

He's pretty convinced it isn't a rumour.

I mean it makes sense really dude. Nobody with half a brain bought the AMD Centurions unless -

1. They didn't know how to OC. Because most 8320s would come close, if not get those clocks.
2. Wanted one because they were AMD fans. Fair play.
3. Ran an extreme cooling loop and wanted a better BIN.

If Intel release a 4c 8t 5ghz CPU though? they'll play the trumpets and roll out the red carpets everywhere.

Plus as I said it's cheating. If you look at Skylake/Kaby in gaming it beats my 5820k easy. However, get mine overclocked to 4.5 and get it threading? yeah, laters.

But with things as they are? a quad core 5ghz would be a clever trick. Thing is Intel have just been shown how people feel about cores/prices. Every one has basically decried the I3 K because it is dual core and very expensive. So I can't see them pulling a 4 core trick either.

A quad core enthusiast chip with a 5Ghz boost could do well. It's so niche and 'quaint' that it might just catch a few fanboys off guard and reel them in, even if they already have a 6700K at 4.6Ghz a 7700K at 5Ghz.

God damn dude that's quite a rant but very true. I remember when the 9590 came out, it was covered pretty much nowhere despite the fact that it could reach 5GHz. As soon as the rumours about Kaby Lake reaching 5GHz came it was everywhere
