Intel CPU future

Hi everyone,

Just trying to get my head around whats currently known/predicted to happen in the future. Trouble is, when you Google this sort of thing you get alot of old and outdated info.

This is what I've managed to work out so far:

1155

Cougar Point = B65/H61/H67/P67/Z68 = Sandy Bridge(32nm) = Current range

Panther Point = B75/Q75/Q77/H77/Z75/Z77 = Sandy Bridge(32nm) & Ivy Bridge(22nm) = Future range

So a new motherboard is needed to upgrade to Ivy Bridge.

2011

Unknown = x79 = Unknown = replacement to 1366

That's all I can work out...

Just wondering if I've missed something or if I'm completely confused (wouldn't surprise me). Anyhelp even if its just a "looks about right" or "learn how to google" would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I haven't got the googling time right now, but didn't some manufacturers show off their 2011 mobos at a recent-ish show ? From that I think the reporters showed off their details.

PCIe3.0 (double the bandwidth of PCIe2.0?)/Quad Mem (256 bit?) are biggies for me. USB3/SATA3 are coming with the territory.

From memory they're the mobos with the memory on either side of the cpu. Still don't know if it's Quad channel or pseudo quad, i.e. 128 bit still but the cpu divies it up to cores. Still ddr3 tho iirc.

Lots of grey areas I know. Know nothing about the cpus or the chipset.

Here's what i've been able to suss out so far, the 2011 x79 chipset is the Sandybridge E which is to replace the 1366 chipset supposed to be released q4-q1 2011-2012. The first of the ivybridge chipsets is supposed to be capable of being installed on an 1155 motherboard so you don't have to replace it they supposedly come out q2-q4 2012. The 2011 ivybridge to fit the 2011 motherbord is to be released sometime in 2013. And the new 28nm graphics cards are supposedly due anywhere from q4 2011 onwards.

Personally, I'd be suprised if there aren't BIOS updates for the Cougar Point boards to support the 1155 Ivy Bridge chips when they come out. You might lose some performance if they've changed things around (for instance PCIe3 support, which I'd expect by then), but the chips should work okay otherwise.

Sandy Bridge, 32nm, LGA 1155 socket, H67/P67/Z68 chipsets. Released Q1 2011.

Ivy Bridge, 22nm (die shrink only), LGA 1155 compatibility, i.e. works on H67/P67/Z68. Released around Q4 2011/Q1 2012.

The above are 'mainstream' boards, with Ivy Bridge having roughly 20% better performance due to die shrink, plus better thermals and such.

Sandy Bridge E, 32nm, LGA 2011 socket, X79 chipset. Release Q3/Q4 2011? Heard there was a delay, not sure though.

This is the 'enthusiast' board, very high prices, (think LGA 1366 sort of prices), of course there will be some gems however. Not sure of performance gain over Sandy Bridge.
