Intel Core i9-7980XE 18 Core HEDT CPU Review

what a monster :) , nice review Tom , and as you pointed out its a dream product , something to aspire too , or just lust over ,

That is a really impressive CPU. It exceeds what I thought it would be. It's actually slightly more efficient than the 1950X as well, and with its overclocking headroom it is definitely the most powerful CPU to get. I can't wait to see builds with it installed.

Have you seen the prices for pre binned Skylake X's on OverclockersUK??

The 7980XE pre binned to 4.6 GHz is £2199.95 that's near on £400 over the regular price for a non binned 7080XE which are £1799.99

Intel seem to have taken "Shut up and give me your money" as a business model on these.

I dont think its intel who is binning them. I may be wrong but its normally an aftermarket place and they add $$4 to the price for their time and guarantee.

either way I'm with wyp running out to get a lotto ticket me wants one with a rampage board and sli'd 1080ti's

No point getting a lotto ticket for me as I couldn't win a free trip to the loo, even if I had the money I still don't know if I'd buy one of these

To be fair to OcUK and 8 Pack when they state 4.6 pre binned the CPUs will clock higher than that with decent custom water cooling.

If I had the money to do it right I would. Plus I'm big on the intel side even though they have buggered things a bit of late. AMD just took to long to imho come close to intel vega was a massive disappointment for me. I was pulling for them since they did very well with Ryzen. Plus I'd think a rig of this power would be good for a long time to come.

Its 8pack binning the CPU's

I'd have to put myself in an asylum before I bought one of these, Anything over a grand for a CPU and people should start to ask themselves some very serious questions.

I don't get this CPU at all. Don't most professionals who need core horsepower use dual Xeon systems? I don't see where this fits, except as a shot across AMDs bow aimed at Threadripper. Maybe I'm completely wrong, as I have no knowledge of professional workstations.

Yes it is almost as silly as buying a high performance car in the UK where the speed limit is 70 mph.

one simply can not put a price on epeen just no way its like the old commercials

AMD Threadripper 999$
INTEL 7820X 599$
EPEEN PRICELESS

True that, For you I'd say it's worth it though seeing as you run quad SLI setups and are a big Civ player so need all the CPU grunt you can get but for the majority of people it would be an insane purchase even for enthusiasts.
