hi guys

having some wierd problem with my cpu cooler. it the same one that came with my intel core i3 2100. i recently was having a look around the bios and found intel smart fan target and as the cooler was the most noisy thing in my pcIi decided to turn it on and it made an immediate difference to the noise ( especially at night )

but then the wierd stuff started
sad.gif
the temps when i play battlefield 3 keep creeping up and in 2 weeks it has gone from about 58 degrees max to 75 max and im getting a tad worried

should i purchase a new cooler now for about 30 quid or try something else as im planning on upgrading to a 2500k and a nh-d14 as soon as i can get the money together.

any help would be great

Unfortunately the stock coolers are noisy. To combat the heat the whiny little fans have to spin at ridiculous speeds to keep the CPU cooled, that's why alot of people go for the aftermarket cooler. You should be able to set the fan speed in your bios so that it will run at 100% when gaming. While 75C is high, and I wouldn't run it at that 24/7, you should start worrying if it hits 90C +. The other options are to buy the D14 and mount that on the i3 2100, buy a fan controller or use a software fan speed utility such as SpeedFan.

Hope that helps.

75C is fine no worries, since you're going to be replacing it with another CPU and an HH-D14, it'll last. My CPU sometimes gets up to 85C and runs fine and has been doing so for 4+ months

(though most peopel prefere sub 70C temps)

Your coolers probably come loose since it's using push pins. Make sure it's seated properly for the time being and every time you take off the cooler you should re apply thermal paste and re seat it.

If you don't have any thermal paste you can buy some for a few quid.

thanks for the quick reply mate

ill try and scrape together 65 quid for the d14 now then. might get a new fan controller aswell as the one that came with my pc is only able to control 2 fans -.- with that size cooler on my lil i3 i wouldnt be suprised if it goes sub zero

The Intel stock coolers aren't very good and can't remove the heat very well when things get hot. I think you would be best to turn smart fan back on for now as those temps seem a bit warm.

As for a replacement cooler if you are looking at getting a NH-D14 shortly I would just look to buy that as soon as and use it on the i3 until you get your 2500k. This should sort the issues and save you having to buy 2 coolers. It is probably a bit of an overkill for the i3 but will save you having a spare cooler laying around.

If you don't want to buy the NH-D14 yet try reseating the cooler with new paste and see if that helps.
