The new Conroe and Merom based Intel Core chips get a new name, Core 2 Duo. Would that be core to duo, or core two duo. Anyway, the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition are the frist desktop based Core chip's lacking the Netburst architecture. The Core 2 Extreme will be the first available, following the standard Core 2 Duo E6700, and so on. Merom and Conroe are both based on the 65nm manufacturing process, and feature aggressive power management features and a shared L2 cache. Conroe and Merom will both be backwards compatible with recently manufactured desktop and mobile motherboards.
Intel's recent roadmap confirms Conroe will be shipped sometime in July of 2006, followed by Merom in August of 2006. Intel is expected to show off these new chips at Computex 2006, on June 6th.
