Installing memory into lanes?

Hi

What is the difference between the 4 lanes where you can install your memories in? I have 2x8Gb memories and wounder if there is a difference between installing them into lane 1 and 3(black) vs 2 and 4(gray)? I assume that my memories are meant to be installed in either black or gray and not lane 1 and 2?

My motherboard is asus z97 pro gamer.

It's all about dual channel, if you have a memory kit i.e matched pairs then they should be placed as such into the correct slots, in your case 1-3 or 2-4, this ensures that they perform in dual channel mode which gives a slight performance increase of around 5-8%.

Makes no difference, but as you mention you should install the modules in the same coloured slots to take advantage of dual/triple channel.
It will still work if you use different coloured slots but unless the slot is broken there is absolutely no reason to do that.
