Installing Mach II GT on a P5B Deluxe

I finally received the mounting kit for my Mach II GT, but when I went to try out the mounting it seems that it doesn't quite fit on the P5B Deluxe. It's definitely the right kit because the holes line up, however it seems the catch on the edge of the CPU retention mechanism because it won't lie flush with the top of the processor.

What am I suppose to do about this? I considered removing the retention mechanism, but it doesn't look easy to remove. Is this a problem with the P5B Deluxe, or is it just that socket 775 mounting kits don't fit flush with the MB?

Okay the options are simple but reuire a dremel (or similar generic tool).

Lets first double check you got the right kit - post pics for instant yes/no.

Firstly you can mod (not remove) the CPU retainer - but before you do please post pics of the so that we can advise the best solution, of course I use the royal 'we' as there are people with a lot of experience here in mods and stuff.

2ndly - You can mod the bracket to accomadate the retainer - again - pics of the issue would be helpful as we (using the royla we) can then advise accordingly.

Just some tips when such mods are carried out - it is important to make sure that the seal string makes good contact between the bracket and the motherboard and that when it is installed the cpu kit is square to the board - sometimes (like with my skt939 kit) you have to use a dremel to make grooves in the kit so that it will accomadate some small components, again make sure that you still use seal string in teh groove you make to ensure a nice positive seal.

I guess depending on where you are in the world you could send the board and kit (or travel with it) to one of the senior guys here to get it modded and learn from the experts :)

If you live close to me you can learn from 'bodgit and scarper' :)

I'll try to get pics up tomorrow. I live in California, and I think that most of the people on these boards are from Europe. So getting someone else to mod it for me may not be an option.

Sorry it took me so long to get pics up. I just finished my finals today and haven't had any time.

Here's the kit:

The arrow points to the part that I think is getting in the way.

Pic of the socket and the part that's in the way. It might be more than just that much though.

Mounted pic, so you can see that it's the right kit.

It's not flat! grrr.

I tried to get a pic of how much it wiggles up and down. It didn't come out very well, but look at the circled area and you can see that it moves.
