Instability if I add more RAM?

Hey guys,

I was thinking of adding some more RAM to my rig as I'm beginning to do a lot of video rendering and rendering from audio creation programs. As I am on P45 and the RAM clock is linked to the FSB, my RAM is currently OC'd at 865MHz from 800MHz, and is still using the recommended timings of 4-4-4-12 and 2.0Volts. Upping the voltage didn't get my RAM OC stable, in fact that just lead to BSODs. Instead I enabled the 'MEM OC Charger' and that seemed to do the trick. So it's currently 2x2GB of Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800 @ 4-4-4-12(3T, and CPU-Z reads it as 2T) 2.0V

If I add another two sticks, will it lead to instabilities with the OC, as I've heard this can happen?

I'm hoping someone experienced like Tom Logan can answer this one

Yes it can happen and you will need to play around with overclocks but shouldn't be that hard to get going if you did

I will be using more of the same DIMMs. I just don't want it to be a waste of money. Do you mind looking at my other post to do with building a new comp. for my dad? heh, I'm on my PSP doing all of this.

you might need to test the new ram to make sure it will do the same settings, you might also need more voltge to the mch to keep all 4 dimms happy at those same settings. you may have to relax your timings a little bit if you cant keep them all happy at those speeds/timings but you will be able to get them all running even if it needs just a little tweak here and there.

Hey again Marsey!

Why is it that having more DIMMs can cause instabilities? Also, what is the likelyhood of me having to tweak some settings, as if you remember, my RAM doesn't like voltage increases in the slightest?

its the stress it places on the nb (well the mem controller in it) as your asking it to do almost twice as much work, more voltage helps it do more work, as does relaxing the timings a little.

untill you get the new sticks this is all just guess work as you may be able to put them in and have no trouble at all so dont think for a second that you are going to, but if you do its only a tweak here or there to sort it out.

1st thing i would do is to swap the new in for your current ones and test those at these settings, because if they dont want to play here you need to rethink things (thats a big if and given your getting more of the same shouldnt be a problem).

once you know they are good put the old stuff in and see, now you might need to increse the mch voltage a notch or 2 to stay stable, no biggie. you might need to up your trd 1 or trfc a few or maybe both and a touch more voltage.

i cant see you needing any more than that tbh and thats worst case.
