Info on extra chip (6800XT)

Hi guys,

I've just removed the heatsink from my XFX 6800XT to prepare for conversion to water cooling, and discovered an extra little chip hiding beneath it (lower left).

Could anyone tell me what it is? Specifically what kind of cooling it needs. As you can see from the outline, it isn't on the most efficient part of the heatsink - so would it be happy with a little passive heatsink stuck on, or would it require some kind of modded fan-based job?

Thanks in advance :)

Thats normal mate. ;)

The bigger of the two is the GPU itself.. and the little one at the bottem controls the output.

Or that is what I think.. could be wrong.

I used to have SLIed XFX 6800XTs, they were lush. :)

That is an AGP/PCI-Express bridge chip. It converts the PCI-Express on the 6800 GPU to AGP. I would think that a couple of beefy ram heatsinks would do the job.

That was my next post :)
