Ikea recalls their popular ASKSTORM 40W USB charger over safety concerns

I mean, the genius of modern wall chargers is that the charger itself is inserted into live AC power, and the only cable and conector with the actually high potential risk of failure only carries low voltage DC power. This one is clearly built different with a long cable carrying AC power, but if they're recalling a charger because the cable can get damaged when used improperly then why don't we recall and refund 80% of modern electronics? I mean, you could damage the power cord on your TV, Microwave Oven, Fridge, Toaster, Computer, laptop, many kinds of standalone lamps, etc and then you could easily get electrocuted when handling said damaged power cable while plugged to the wall... That would literally be improper use/user error.

Honestly I'm glad they are taking full respinsibility here, but also if I had bought one of these it would be to use in a desk I don't see it as a travel charger, they're not really practical for that or very portable at all, and I would not return mine in face of this issue. To think there were companies that made actual design flaws only to make absurd claims like they weren't at fault, and passing the blame to the consumer like consumers are stupid.

The point you miss with this style charge is that appliances plug from the socket to the appliance with no exposure between.

Charger cables have an exposed end which we can come into contact with. IF there is a fault with the AC-DC convertor, the entire thing could melt. Seen it happen with an apple charger for the old ipad mini. We intentionally tampered with it as a test before we started selling them.

I agree though. Nice to see full responsibility taken here.

This is a perfect travel charger. Not sure what you mean. Its not something you put in your pocket on the bus while you travel to work. Its the kind you put in your rucksack/backpack and pull out while on the train etc. The size is smaller than many others which are considered "travel chargers"

I don't like carrying chargers at all, I use samsung phones, I have a 25W (maximum charging rate for samsung phones) charger in my bedroom, another one in my office, and I also have a wireless charger in my desk setup at home, so I don't carry chargers at all, they're all fixed in place if I visit someone I either make sure to charge my phone before going out or I ask to borrow their charger once I'm there.

Wen I do need to carry a charger with me I make sure to go with your common included-with-your-phone wall charger like any of the 25W samsung chargers I have, that's becasue I can separate the cable from the charger and carry both in an ideal manner, preventing damage to my cable and to my charger. Usually people that have broken cables near the termination get that by throwing the charger with cable attached into their backpack, then multiple other things on top of it creating pressure and over time damaging the cable or even the port on the charger, or they use their phone while plugged and keep pulling on the cord. By separating both you can neatly store the cable in a pocket or somehow avoid it being under stress when restriced by the charger port.

This one is a 40W charger so I'm not considering it a laptop charger as I'd only consider a laptop charger at 65W+, also it has a permanently attached power cord which means you cannot separate them and thus it will likely be under stress if you carry it in a bakcpack causing damage, it's also a charger with a wide body design and multiple outputs so really I'd buy it to plug somewhere beneath my desk and them run it over to the top of my desk and glue it there with double-sided tape, there I'd use it to charge any number of things like my smartphone, smartwatch, headphones, earbuds, etc. really a charger with built-in wall plug and a female USB conector is by far the best to travel, it will be even more compact, won't require you to store a 1m cord along with it in the same pocket, etc. So those are the ones I tend to travel with, and you can get those with like 65W+ I've seen some nearing 100W if you really need that, they are quite larger than my 25W samsung charger but still pretty compact while avoiding issues with the cable and still using less space in your bag or backpack because less cables, as cables also do fill space.

I carry a 20000mah power brick it has connections for everything you'd ever need, it'd charge my phone 5-6 times over and can charge 5 things at once.

something like this is super handy if your away for the weekend as you don't need to carry anything else or even cables as they are built into the power block.

Yeah exactly. I have seen much larger chargers branded as portable. This one is tiny.

was the one i got, i like it does the job main thing is cables not needed to carry they unclip easy enough, plenty similar ones like it highly expect you can get higher mah levels but i think for flights 10000mah is max allowed unsure.

Just very handy I charge my S23 on it as if there is power cut in the night it's been charged etc if i go away far from home always take it it's pocketable if a little heavier than a phone.
