IDNet Charging for bandwidth use?

I lost track of my bandwidth usage this month by downloading a couple of large files, and I strayed over 30gb. Simon dropped me a note to let me know, and that was helpful, and I promised I'd calm it for the rest of the month.

Now I've received a mail telling me that there's a charge of £1/gb over 30gb... This is the first I've heard of this... Is everyone else aware of this? :( I'd have liked a warning of some sort before being liable to a charge I've never signed up to?!

Yes, but that wasn't the deal I signed up to. The SX deal was generally uncapped, as long as we kept our noses clean. I was just saying I'd have hoped for some notification if that situation had changed?

there was information posted about this on the forum!!! I received a email today actually, it goes like;

Over the time period 12/10/2006 to 20/10/2006 (8 days) you have downloaded 9.34 GB of data. Your monthly allowance is 30GB.

Based on your current level of usage, your projected bandwidth use (data download) for a 30 day time period will be: 35.03 GB.

If your current bandwidth usage continues then this would equate to an excess bandwidth charge of: £5 [£1/GB] for this month.

You can monitor your bandwidth use online daily in the Customer Account section on the website: https://www.idnet.net/login

I'd remember to look, but i can never remember my login and password for my adsl line.

Here, or the IDNetters forum? (Which I've never used)

That's an odd system - you download one big file over a couple of days and you immediately get a warning. Say you download an 8 gb file over two days - your predicted monthly usage shoots up to 120gb!!!

Yep I got it too - I had download Vista RC1 and RC2. I never EVER exceed my bandwidth limit so the warning kinda

Yes, because I asked for the upgrade and we agreed to change the terms of the contract... IDNet can't alter the terms unilaterally.

have you ever exceeded 30gb in the past any of you?

maybe idnet have introduced this 30gb cap to your accounts recently?

Generally uncapped? Either it is or isn't. I think 30GB is a huge amount of data per month and extremely generous on a fair usage policy. It does seem very odd though that the conditions have appeared to change somewhat. Perhaps you can send Simon a 'please explain' email (politely of course ;) )

I don't mind the 30gb fair usage policy but it's annoyed me that I had 8days of high use (never have done before) and I get warned I'm going to go over my limit...which I wont do

at the end of the day, its more than likely a automated message, and at least it's a reminder.

But i would love to a different way for us to monitor our bandwidths. If IDNET could just create a page that we have to pass user and pass to in the url. then it would display a xml page with your personal bandwidth data. we could then create a small app that ran in the system tray and keep track of the stats.

Just an idea, anyone think idnet would be able to put this into place if it sounds like a good idea?

That is totally Unreasonable! ....30Gb a month?! ...i mean WTF?!

i am on unlimited, i manage 30Gb a week, i cant believe a company would offer such a limited service and call it good!

i pay £25 a month, for 2mbps, unlimited up or down.

it just astounds me that someone would pay for a LIMITED internet service.

EDIT: month, sorry, too outraged, at such an apauling isp, ....actually having the cheek to limit downloads

Guys, this 30gb cap is nothing new

We went thru this a while back - the 30gb cap was put in place to deter bandwidth hogs that overload the lines spoiling the service for other people and causing prices to increase.

IDNet are great because they:

A) Dont over subscribe

B) Actually give a sh*t about their customers.

C) Have the most efficient customer service.

If you just want to get ADSL and hammer the crap out of it, then IDNet isn't for you - and they never advertised that they were.

EDIT: and doomie 22, £25 a week?? IDNet is £15 a Month for 8mb MAX (SysXtreme offer)

You dl WAY too much then.

ooo yea, ill go for the likes of @OL just so I can download as much as I want...shame it will take me hours more, if my connection goes down il have to wait at least a week for them to even answer my calls and do something about it. Its a good job those technical support staff have a handy guide on their computer so they can follow stupid procedures because they dont know sh!t.

Or maybe idnet, with a generous cap, no shaping at all and they are all experts, who know their stuff and speak english as their primary language.

find me an adsl ISP in the UK that has neither a download limit or a FUP and doesnt charge through the roof for it.

telewest cable really are very good, and i have never had problems but i expect even they have a FUP.

doomie22 if you actually have a look around ISP's you will find that 30gb limit for such an excellent service is very good, and tbh id be quite interested to know what you are downloading?

guys by imposing this (generous compared to others) limit, it helps keep idnet customers on a good contention, and not over subscribing as jim said, if it werent thr your broadband service wd not be as good, simple as.

@kemp, as nathan said i expect it is automated, and although it may not help you, i expect it helps a lot of others and reminds them to stick to the limit. i expect you can turn the notifications off if you ask simon?

You should look at all ISP packages going on atm. I've worked for a few ISP's and I must say, I couldn't be happier with IDNET's service - No outages, constant good speeds + pings, and their phone lines are manned by helpful, down to earth people.

What is your problem mate? You want the world on a plate dont ya. I'd advise you to go on Tiscally or Talk Talk's 'unlimited' £14.99 packages and then come crawling back to IDNET in a matter of weeks... :rollingla
