bulldozer is AM3+ and it is not backwards compatble
yes they are opterons but i have one word for you xeon, meaning you could use them in desktops just like the xeons
the 16 core opterons will have a different socket, the G34

thats along time to keep componants fella
To get the same power (ish) you need a 1090T hexcore from amd and overclock it. But tbh mate the 1366 socket will be about longer than the am3 socket. Intel sells better later when you upgrade and is easier to buy used parts for aswell.
Long and sort of it is Id get a 930 if it was me.
The i7 is the better socket. As it is a hex core can only keep up with the i7 if its overclocked. The i7 overclocks further and thus is hte route to go.
Do you need that much RAM dude? I would have thought 6GB is more than enough, unless you run loads of VMs or do loads of poster art editing. In terms of powersupply, avoid OCZ, go for a nice Corsair AX850W , as these look to be the dog's testicles. And that case looks like it has been hit with an ugly train, then beaten some more with an ugly stick. There are probably better cases out there, for similar money. And in terms of coolers, look at the noctua offerings, as the H50 will not keep an i7 overclocked in check.
Look at the extensive reviews on OC3D, but hte big Noctua is the way to go, short of real WCing.
Pulled the trigger. My new computer is built... By evening tomorrow I'll have it all set up in my room. I'd like to thank you all for your suggestions. Much appreciated.
I've updated my spreadsheet: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AgkO8HEDKxFldDluUVFCbTRIS3lEallrbDVULWRSZ0E&authkey=COGfo5YP&hl=en#gid=0
Only piece I'm missing is the Noctua. I'm gonna wait til it is on sale. Since I'm not OCing anything right now I can just use stock fan. Not on the list is a few case fans... if anyone has suggestions as to which brand, that'd be nice. Although I'll take a wild guess and say Corsair is the way to go? if they make case fans?
I'm looking for some input as to what a fair competition from AMD would be for the i7-930... if any...
$ is a concern here but my goal is to decide between Intel and AMD at the moment. If I can achieve pretty much the same performance for cheaper, it's a no brainer which route I go...
What did you get?
