i7 870 OC

So.... I have an i7 870 and I really want to OC it to 4.2GHz but the maximum I reached was 3.85GHz 160x24 @ auto voltage. If I changed the BUS to 165 and kept the multiplyer on 24x I would get the BSOD (blue screen of death) at startup or when testing it with OCCT, so it wasn't stable. I kept all voltages on auto because I didn't want to damage nothing. Is it something with the voltages that needs adjusting or something else? And I tried 200x19 but It crashed just like 165x24. I have an ASUS P7P55D-E PRO, G. Skill DDR3 2x2GB 1600MHz 7cl ram, GTX470... (if you want to know anything else, ask)

Thanks!

Drop the multi and up the BCLK, What volts are you changing. If you say its all on auto then thats your problem.

Auto will damage your rig more because it will overvolt a lot more than needed normally.

So start at the basics dude. You need to go and read some guides.

I have ram set to 1.6v ofcourse

Wow, didn't think the computer destrois itself like that

I need to know how to set Cpu core voltage, IMC voltage, CPU PPL voltage and PCH voltage. I want to learn this stuff... where do I start?

And what about CPU Differential Amplitude and CPU Clolk Skew? do I leave it on auto or mess with that too?

Thanks for the fast relpy Tom!

for 4.2 try around 1.35 depends matey, my 950 is an odd fella takes it 1.28 for 4ghz which is a lil high for my liking but then again it does 4.2 at 1.31v and 4.4 at 1.34v and 4.6 ive currently working which is around 1.38v

Wow nice! I wish I had frequencies like that =D

how did just quote me? ive been here for a while and I still dont know how to do it, not to get off topic

no no it's fine... Do you see a Reply button on the lower right side of this or any other post?

Hit that and you can quote =)

And I need to aks you something. What does Folding mean?

*****I MUST NOT DOUBLE POST*****

folding is a very good thing

cant explain it that well but its somthing to do with finding a cure for cancer or somthing, tbh I would not have a clue. one of the mad folding guys will tell ya or I think theres a folding setion under the forums. All I know is that folding is for a good cause

Youve got to teac h him how to work his way up or he will learn nothing.

Start from the beginning and work you way up mate. Watch the Ram speed as you change the BCLK though as you may have to knock the ram back as you work you way up.

If you REALLY want to learn you have to put the time in, thats how youll gain both mine and the other members respect.

I know dude

I try to keep the ram as close to 1600, from below... now I'm at 3.8GHz like before, only it's 200x19 @ 1.4v spot on, running OCCT Linpack now at 12min

I want to put as much time in as possible, but I don't know where to start...

And sources95, Thanks

EDIT: TTL you said to lower the volts.. so I quickly set them to 1.325v, still at 3.8GHz running OCCT and CPU-Z shows it's on 1.344v...
smile.gif

EDIT 2: tried even lower... now I set the volts to 1.30650 (or something like that) and it's stable

You wont need more than 1.4v, if anything thats WAY high for those clocks. Youll need to start tweaking and working out what other volts you need to bring the Vcore down.

The 870 we have will do 200x20 @ around 1.35v OCCT stable. Obviously not all CPU's are the same AND we did set all our other volts correctly to make sure she was stable without over volting the CPU too much.

What cooler are you using?

What voltages are you using? I want to try them... just for fun

A Noctua NH-U12P SE2 w 1 fan

EDIT: and I get like 77°C max.

Budd u might want to get a d14 and it's worth it or get more noctua fans to keep your temps alot lower 77 max temps are quite high for my liking then again im paranoid with my temps 4.6ghz is around 78 max how are you going now?

I added the 2nd fan and now it sits at 75°C @ 3.8GHz 1.32v

running OCCT Linpack. Well I guess I'm gonna' buy the D14 and its cheap right now (66€)

Dude... that's almost 1GHz over my OC and you're 3°C higher
