Hallo people. I am new to this forum. I am Ryan from South Africa. Please to meet you. I have just finished building my new system and I have a question as I am new to overclocking and still in the learning process. My PC is as follows

Thermaltake GT10 Case
Antec 620W Modular PSU
MSI Z77 GD65 Gaming MB
Intel I5 3570K CPU
MSI Radeon R7950 Twin Frozr GPU
1 x 8gb Apacer BLK Panther (Soon to be 2 x 8gb Trident X 2400mhz RAM)
Thermaltake Water 2 Extreme Liquid Cooler
OCZ Solid state 128mb

I have overclocked my PC to 4.5Ghz by only adjusting the following:
Multiplier - 45
Vcore - 1.250V

I have only run Intelburn Test for now to see how much G-flops it delivers. I am very dissapointed :(. It is only giving me 56 gflops.

My brother is running exactly the same motherboard as I am except he has the normal Z77 GD65 and not the "gaming edition" also with an I5 3570K CPU, same water cooler but a better graphics card. He is also running 1 x 8gb Apacer BLK Panther RAM (I am lending 1 of his RAM sticks as I am waiting for my RAM to arrive next week). His pc is running @4.5Ghz as well and pushing 95 G-flops compared to my 56.......Now how is this possible? Can I have a bad chipset maybe?

Sorry if I sound stupid or dumb in any way as I am a total newbie to the overclocking.......

Ryan

ryan, welcome to the OC3D forum.

i've used IBT and not really worried about GFLOP report. this report takes a lot
of factors and gives it a "grade". i've found different test methods with IBT can
yield different GFLOP values. the easier the test, the lower the value. but again,
it is just a number.

what stress level and number of runs are you using?
so are you stable on the multi/vCORE?

Hey mate thank you for he reply. Yes Vcore voltage i check with CPU-Z. Very stable and i do the test with normal stress levels. It just blinds me that my brother's pc hits 95 gflops as it is now only with 1 x 8gb RAM and me with the same chip also the same amoumt of RAM gets 56. Ive managed to get my CPU stable now @4.6Ghz and vcore 1.250v hitting 61 gflops at the moment. But jee, im totally disappointed that i dont get the same figure as my brother with his pc :(. Thats why i thought i might have a bad chipset?

move from standard stress to maximum stress and retest.

you could have issues in the background causing low reports. i know you both
don't have the same identical computer settings and appz.. and like most silicone
chips are not all the same.

don't sweat the GFLOPS number. use the vCORE/multiplier stability testing and
benchmark software titles for proving.

Installed latest service packs? Sounds like you are lacking AVX support that is included in Win 7 SP1. However even 95 seems a bit low for a 4.5GHz i5, I would expect an i7 with HTing on to get that while an i5 should be around 115~120 on High at 4.5GHz.

Run OCCT for finding stable OC's. IBT is rather weak compared to others. Also because you are running Ivy bridge:not using AVX in stress tests will damage your Cpu. Always have it on. AVX should only be turned on in Ivy and left off for all other Cpu archtictures(Sandy,Nehlam, Sandy-E,etc.) .

Hey buddies. Ok finally I got it right! As I installed Windows I turned automatic updates off and therefore I never had SP1 installed with the other latest updates as well. I am getting a constant 95 gflops and temperatures on all 4 cores does not exceed 67 degrees. I am running my Vcore @ 1.250 now and it seems to be very stable @4.6Ghz. Remember I am only using 1 x 8Gb Apacer BLK Panther 1600Mhz RAM at the moment as my other RAM would be arriving this week Thursday - Trident X 2600Mhz 16GB (2 x 8Gb).

I am so pleased to see you guys have helped me found the problem . Thanks again to all of you mates. I have not yet done a Prime95 test. I have just downloaded OCCT and I will start playing around with the program and give you guys an update after I get my new RAM this week. Any other sweet programs you guys would prefer I use for decent testing?

Thanks a million buddies
Ryan

What settings are you using in IBT ?

IBT I only use a a stability test...

For performance testing do a 3dmark11 performance run and check the physics score ...

How have you set up the ram in your bios ?? I have the same board and my ram runs @ 1333mhz unless I change manually or run XMP profile..

Also on that board make sure you get the latest 1.9 bios from the msi forums ..

And be carfull with your ram voltage, dont leave it on Auto as the gd65 likes high ram voltage but the ram slots on that board are known to have problems and high failure rate ....

Good luck with your overclocking and if you need any more help just shout ....

Looking forward to seeing some photos of your rig... Looks a nice setup :)

Thanks for your reply buddy. I am using standard settings on IBT. Oooppsss I left my RAM settings all on auto. It reads 1600MHZ in the BIOS as default. I am running 1 x 8gb Apacer BLK Panther at the moment 10 10 10 28 1.5V. Any suggestions what I should change for the OC adaption? I am not too worried about setting the RAM now because I am getting my new RAM on Thursday, G.Skill Trident X 2600 16gb (2 x 8gb).....

Haha bro my pc is low down and average compared to some oaks. So nothing special I have here. I wil take some pictures and upload them after I have installed by new RAM :D......

Mixing ram can be a bad thing. Trying to get one stick at 2600mhz and the other at 1600mhz is bound to cause problems. Try getting pairs next time and for now just get them to do the same speed and timings.

As for IBT only run on maximum settings, i said before it is rather weak. 20hrs of IBT is about = to 8hrs of OCCT. Speaking of OCCT: run OCCT linpack with AVX enabled.

@NeverBackDown

Yes I will never mix my RAMS. I have ordered my Trident X RAMS 16gb (2 x 8gb) and while waiting for them my brother borrowed me 1 of his Apacer 8gb RAMS just to get my PC started for a week :)

Thank you for your advice. I will run the OCCT test this week

Oh gotcha didn't catch that. Don't just thank me: others helped out as well:)

IBT should be run in very high and you will see a gflop increase ...

Just concentrate on getting you voltage as low as possible for the moment ...

Your gonna have to start afresh when you get your ram on thursday anyway ...

How are you temps ??

@FTLN
Yes i will have to do a fresh OC after the new RAM is installed. I downloaded all other programs as well and will start to play around with them too.
I just did an IBT on "very high" setting and only ran 2 tests. Pushing 107 gflops stable @4.6Ghz and Vcore set to 1.250volts. Ive set my DRAM Voltage to 1.53v as well. Tempereratures max on Realtemp 72 degrees. Not bad for a single slot 8gb RAM i think.......

I will start playing around with the other programs as well :)

while using 8GB RAM around 10 rounds in maximum mode
(using around 6.5GB of available RAM) to complete a stable test.

i wouldn't pay much attention to CPU speed (GFlops) as those values
depend on what LINPACK libraries or tests (from library) used by IBT,
they may change each time you start the test even with same parameters.
