I need some advice please.

I now am using an Asus Z97 Pro Gamer board which I built 7 months ago as a backup, low-budget computer and have decided to sell it and build a Z170 system. Possibly an Asus Maximus VIII Extreme board.

My question is I want to OC my i7-6700k from 4.2 to 4.4. Don't really want to go any higher than that. So what would be the minimum memory speed I will need for this OC. I was looking at Corsair Dominators between 10 and 15 latency, 16 gig kit and anywhere between 2133 - 3000 mhz.

Is faster memory needed for overclocking?

And on a second note: I will be cooling my processor with my Noctua NH-U14s in a push/pull setup. Will this be sufficient for cooling my processor?

Thank you in advance!

Keep in mind the more memory modules the higher your chance of a botched overclock (although this is rarely the case any more) especially if you are planning on overclocking the RAM. Faster memory just allows for your CPU to perform optimally without bottleneck, although you will probably NEVER notice a bottleneck unless you really closely watching bench scores.

As for cooling that is for you to find out. Everyone's conditions are different and everyone's processor is different. Depending on the chip lotto.

In all seriousness try and use an AIO for the cpu as you will get better temps when overclocking and as for the memory I'd say the 3000 should be ok and the latency doesn't play a big part much anymore so just go with something that you like the look of and go from there

Thanks for your reply.

And for god sake please have a good PSU!

I'm hoping to be using the Intel i7-7700k processor. It sounds promising.

Thanks for the reply.

So an AIO is what, liquid cooling? If so, is one radiator a good enough choice for just the processor?

On another note, your build states that you are using 32 gigs of ram. Are you using that much ram to also be used as a RAM Disk?

Thanks for your reply.

An AIO is an all-in-one liquid cooler e'g' Corsair H100i etc

plug'n'play.

Surprised no one has said anything about the triple-post

What triple post

Pretty sure you meant edit. Unless you wantthe op to exit and not come back....

That would be a novel approach to helping someone...

Well, after doing a 5 way optimization of my i7-4790k processor with my Asus Z97 Pro Gamer motherboard, I got my cpu overclocked to 4.9 ghz and with my Noctua NH-U14S cooler in a push/pull configuration, I'm maintaining 38 to 40 Celcius. Used Prime95 for many hours with no errors or problems. Then playing Battlefield 4, for a few hours with no stability issues.

So I guess when I build my newer Z170 or Z270 system with the new 1151 i7-7700k processor which has a base mhz of 4.2 and turbo to 4.5ghz, I don't think I will need to push the processor beyond that for good gaming. And my air cooler should do a good job keeping the temps down below the cpu's temp threshold.

Either those settings arent being enforced or you live in I dunno.. in ice? OR......

If you are indeed getting 4.9Ghz and do live in ice or whatever then chances area your voltage will be crazy high.

Never let a board AUTO OC any CPU for you. Do it manual or dont do it at all.

That is basically the same as auto is what Kushiro is saying. 1.808 volts is not possible on air or water. Your chip would fry instantly.

Then obviously something is wrong, but my fans are running quietly but running and so far no problems of any programs crashing. I even ran a burn in with no problems and I'm using integrated video. But I'll set everything to default to be safe.

I'm not doubting any of you. So I guess the boards temps in the bios aren't not accurate. And I guess that goes for all board manufacturers.

Use a program like HWmonitor Link here this will tell you everything you need to know. Just so you can get an accurate reading. If it's still over 1.8 volts then a sensor on the board may be bad. Or try updating the BIOS if possible to maybe fix that issue.

Thank you for the info. Greatly appreciated. I went ahead and just loaded my defaults in bios and I'm back to normal settings. No overclocking. I really don't need to overclock for game performance. Turbo boost to 4.4ghz should be enough for gaming. I'm not going to risk any damage to my processor.

The latest bios is loaded up and all seems to be working good. If I should try a manual overclock, I'll let you guys know what my actual temps are.

My cpu volts is sitting at 1.087 now so I guess that's ok.

Anyway, thanks for all the previous advice.

Thank you very, very much. Greatly appreciated for all your help. Now I just have to wait and see when the i7-7700k, 1080i and possibly a newer 1151 Asus Z270 mobo is going to be released.
