Most new servers with accelerated compute are using this type of connection since at least a few years now. We see these on a daily basis and failure is minimum and much easier for a field engineer to replace and much better for airflow in the chassis. Also as most server motherboards have advanced logging, power issues and post issues are much easier to diagnose from the servers integrated BMC chip.

The power has to come from somewhere. A motherboard is not a power supply.
So there will likely be three 8 pin PCIE connectors somewhere.
For those wondering the connector is already used in servers. And it is fine, and it works. The problem is servers use PSUs like this.
As such you can run larger cables from the connector. On a desktop PC? you can not use those, as they only usually output 12v. So that means you need multiple 12v wires, the same as you need now. Or one of those daft 16 pins, like it or not.
Otherwise the board traces would just burn.
In other words? this changes nothing apart from vanity. Which IMO makes it dumb.

I like the idea and it as mentioned is something already in use by servers, my only concern is that people think Motherboards are expensive now, just wait till they add in the extra for this!
Then add on the extra they will charge because of the possibility of this going wrong and frying your GPU, CPU, RAM etc, and I think even Asus would have a hard time justifying the probable doubling of Motherboard pricing.

This wont become mainstream. It will be left for the premium/high end enthusiast boards because lets face it... too many people with more money than common sense here even on these forums.
If ASUS release a board over £1400 and brag about this new power. People will buy it. Then ASUS will only add the connector to their premium GPUs and crank up the price. Becuase hey.. I have a mobo with the power socket now. I might as well spend the extra £300 on the GPU variant that has it.
I commend them for pushing a new standard, but we know that they will want to monitise this harder and greater than any other brand on the market. Which company wouldnt?...
I just get the feeling that at some point we will go full circle where that connector will not have enough power for the next gen GPUs and will require 1x 6pin connector all over again, which will then lead to an 8 pin, then 2x 8 pin blah blah.

Always going to be a few people that buy anything, this isn't any different really tbh i felt the PSU panel seasonic did was enough for people or the corsair change on connectors, but I guess this is a step on from that to a degree, being honest it's a better solution but if it comes at a high price it's not for me.
