How to check HDD and SSD for errors

I was wondering how, can I check HDD and SSD drives for errors? Just to make sure I did not get broken piece / damaged during shipping process or when I want to check older drive. I would prefer a way to test this in Linux environment but I also have an access to Windows machine.

Use a free to download app like crystaldisk it will show you all the info you need on the health of your drive.

Thank you, I'll look into that and try it out with one of my older drives when I'll be at Win machine.

I have an app under Linux which can give me some basic info about my disks but it does not have much information. It only display something like "Disk is OK (25° C / 77° F)" which is probably just based on the temperatures. I am pretty sure there is some command line tool to check this but I don't know it's name.
