How much would server 2008 put me back?

So say i could install server 2008, and only need my license and activation blah blah

What is the minimum i could pay for one machine kinda thing considering i only want it as a workstation/basic home networking?

Using Server 2008 for the purposes you mention really is overkill. Server 2008 is nowhere near as user friendly as XP or Vista and setting it up properly can be a right ballache, especially when you are new to it. If you are keen to get into server technology, a cheaper and easier option would be Windows Home Server.

Where and how much would it cost me to get a single license/1 workstation or w/e

Well its a Server os, so likely can only get it with a Min of 5Cals.. so about 400 to 500 quid

How often do you reinstall? If its < every 9 months, then you can use the trial version of it and just re-activate it 3 times.

BTW you can't just get it to run out of the box as a workstation OS, it requires tweaks etc...

Yep, I have a copy of it *cough* ISO on a disc*cough* (sorry lads got a bad cough)...

Takes alot of tweaking, in fact I installed it ran it as a webserver/fileserver for me @ college and formatted about a week later. Took me 2 days to get it up and running smoothly .

Not like a standard operating system but , it's very stable.

they are only device/user CAL's (Client Access Licence) which need to be purchased in addition to the server licence if required, server 2008 licences are much more expensive

That mean for CAL is legitimate if it`s not going to be used as a traditional net server ? I don`t see any "... going to use it as a gaming device..." clauses.
