How hard would this be

For manufacturers to supply USB drives instead of metal coasters with their motherboards. Then you just run a batch file and they will update to the latest drivers that are required as well as any software. So you USB stick would be up to date.:)

But since they have a stock of metal coasters they wont do this so why couldnt they have a batch file or whatever so you have your own USB stick that will load everything required for a new install plus software as well as latest BIOS. And you can then just update that whenever you like by running a application on that thumb drive you made.
And another application will install everything you need:rolleyes:

Of course they would have all the old drivers listed on their site as "older" so you can always try them if you have problems.

and if you cant afford to buy a thumb drive then still have it available as a batch file to be downloaded onto your PC and you then run it or something like that

Yeah, but USB stick with software that can be used to update itself implies that the user has an internet connection. That usually means that the user can download and update everything themselves.

I do agree that disks are a little obsolete given the fact that most new PCs lack a CD-drive, but the best place to get your updates and software has always been from the manufacturer's website (at least after the internet was a viable option).

It would be nice to have a one-click solution, but PC builders are well used to taking the extra few steps.

With Asrock and MSI at least you don't even need to do anything. You just install their software update app and it does everything for you (drags down all the drivers, installs them etc).

The apps also know when best to reboot the rig (as some drivers need it) and it's all automated so you couldn't even do it quicker yourself with USB tbh. Well, not unless you had a pants internet speed.

For my older rigs though I have hard drives in them that are dormant with all of the drivers and software they may need (especially versions of Alienware Command Centre as some newer versions don't work properly).

MSI live update 6 no longer updates the BIOS though. The older version 5 did

Well ASUS Rog motherboards do get supplied with USB instead of disk. Only a matter of time before others follow suit.

I never noticed that it did tbh ! but yeah, just loaded 6 and no bios. It must have bricked some boards or something lol.

I used 5 and used the BIOS feature at least 5 times. I never had a problem

But I upgraded and don't use MSI board. So when my cousin built his new computer and got a MSI board I just told him to use the Live Update so he doesn't mess it up(he's not very technical) and that's how I found out it no longer had it and had to walk him through how to manually do it.
