How good is this system?

Hi guys,

Could you give me advice on this system and let me know whether I'll get good performance while gaming please? Will I get 60+ FPS on all games?

Specs:
  • LGA 1366 Intel Core Xeon X5670 3.06Ghz Hyperthreaded 6 Core 12 Thread Processor
  • GTX 1060 STRIX 6GB
  • 8GB RAM 1333 DDR3
  • 120GB SSD
  • 500W PSU
  • OEM mATX LGA1366 Motherboard

Here is the link to the build.

Looking at the spec list for that PC I really don't think it is worth £900, to me it just looks like this seller is trying to take advantage of low-cost EOL (end of life) server chips.

To start off the Xeon X5670 clocks at 2.96GHz base, it is the X5675 the has a base clock of 3.06, which even then these CPUs can be bought uber cheaply on the Used market. For gaming you would be better off with a higher clocked CPU with less cores, as this is an old Sandy-Bridge Era Xeon, Intel has released Ivy bridge, Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake and Kaby Lake since then.

For this price, I also don't see a 120GB SSD and a Pulse (never heard of the brand) PSU being a good deal either. Just looked up the PSU in question, £17 (far too cheap) with a few bad reviews attached.

If you want to go for a pre-built go to a more reputable site or try to build your own PC. We can help you select parts if you want assistance.

Update, just looked at your other PC and it is just as bad, the CPU is ancient by today's standards and it used a CiT PSU, which again is low quality.

They are attaching a high-end GPU to cheaply purchased legacy hardware for profit, the Pulse and CiT PSUs alone are a sign that they have no idea what they are doing. I would never trust any of my systems with a PSU with those unreputable brands.

Yup I bet that mobo is Chinese too, and not very good.

£900 is far, far too much money for that.

Or maybe just a scam? Ie, trying to scam less knowledgeable people, such as the OP in buying these systems. As if I weren't as into PCs as I am, these would certainly look very good, especially for the price etc.

So in my eyes, this just looks like someone is simply trying to rip people off with bad and unknown parts/brands as components.

Exactly what I was thinking, taking advantage of these new/cheap LGA1366 motherboards and EOL CPUs to make cheap systems. The PSU and chassis used are both pretty much the cheapest available, which is OK for the chassis but certainly not OK for the PSU.

I find the lack of clarification on component selection very worrying, no brand for the DDR3 memory and several other parts.

As WYP said, no. Do NOT buy those systems.

Pretty much.

Hard to know if these people are scam artists or if they genuinely think that they are making great low-cost systems. It is hard to judge intent in this regard.

Cheap EOL Xeons can be used to create some great performance/£ in certain use cases but both of these CPUs are too old to be sold in a "new" system.

Back to the main topic, if the OP wishes we can provide a list of more reputable system builders or help him craft his own system if he wants to build his own PC.

Just did a bit a digging on that site. No phone number, no address. Just oxymorons like this.

We operate online only but you can still get in touch via the power of the internet!

Yup... They seem to have made their page and business "funny", but it's too much in my opinion and they don't seem serious at all.

They also have a failbook page with 4000+ followers, which I can only assume after a quick browse are the result of multiple giveaways. Only 3 customer reviews which could be legit but I highly doubt it.. Anyways I'd avoid and look else where their prices are hugely inflated for the hardware you'd be buying.

Aye I know the feels for business in the IT sector, I tried to do builds when I was self employed.. now unless you have a fat bank account and a huge shop filled with OEM stock you are doomed to fail as you can't compete with the big boys.

Back in 1998 it was hard enough. We were up against the likes of Dell and Gateway. The only way we could compete was to make the cheapest piles of tat we could (PC chips motherboards with onboard everything) and nasty cases with sharp edges.

We did sell a lot of them though tbf, I mean at one point I was knocking 15 together a day. But yeah, anything high end? forget it. Like you say if you have no buying power you are screwed (kinda like Overclock.co.uk they got slaughtered by Scan and OCUK etc).

Vibox were doing OK for a while but that was only because they were selling cheap crap in a case that appealed. And the thing is? you usually buy one PC like that when you are starting out, learn about parts etc and how badly you got ripped off and then never making the same mistake again.

But yeah, kids these days who build PCs have Youtube etc at their disposal. Ask one of them how Windows works? haha they haven't got a clue. They couldn't troubleshoot their asses.

There was a massive issue with some other site I recall on overclockers which turned into quite a police case.

dreamcomputers.com or similar was like this site above. turns out the site was owned by a kid. He would use peoples money from orders to buy gear for himself and if it clocked higher than his cpu, he would swap them out and send out his own.

In most cases he sent out dud, or empty boxes. Led to a very large number of customers being scammed.

And I bet a very big grounded period for that kid, without access to computers ...

Ahhhh Will Rittman. Yup, was a big star on AVforums disputes threads. Not only did he scam loads of people out of cash with his computer store front (which went under a few different names) he also scammed people on AVForums with bogus Oppo gear.

IIRC he's since been to jail twice.

It seems he is potentially back in business. So be warned. If you look at the thread i linked it seems some a posting hes back on his old account.
