How far can I stretch a dollar?

I want to buy a laptop. I would like to purchase one for $700 (excluding a warranty, AV, and office 2k3).

Basically I'll be using the laptop for college related tasks (writing programs [VB .NET], JAVA [textpad/JBuilder/BlueJ], C++ [textpad], writing essays [Microsoft Word 2003], Calculus & Physics [Excel], Business [Powerpoint], and things of that nature).

As you can tell, I'm not doing anything really processor intesive so I don't need a cutting-edge processor. I would like a gig of RAM (or more), as I do quite a bit of programming. I think a 60GB hard drive will suffice. XP Professional is a must. I'm not partial to AMD or Intel. I don't care about screensize (so long as I can use the laptop without straining my vision).

Finding a laptop with those specs at that price is definately a tough deal, you really have to spend about a grand to get in to something that would have a gig of RAM. Most of the sub-1000 machines come with 512.

I'd take a look on eBay and see if you might be able to pick up a Toshiba Satellite at a decent price, I know they have a few lesser expensive Satellites in the lineup.

Now that I think about it your best bet might be to customize a laptop straight from Dell or someone of the sort. Get one of their uber affordable low end models and just boost up the RAM in the customization menu before you purchase it. You could probably take one home for less than 800 w/ 1gb if you did that.

I would be willing to to buy a laptop with 512KB of memory so long as there are accomodations to add more if need be.

I'm not a big fan of second hand goods.

They don't have an email this page thing setup...

The only things I changed were the RAM (upped it to 1gb) and the HD (upped it to 60gb) and that's it... Comes to $679. Might think about one for myself, rofl, that's a pretty damn sweet deal for a lil knock-around lappy.

That price doesn't include XP Pro. My question to you is, "would purchase that laptop without XP Pro?"

Indeed!

Yeah I definately would take it w/o XP Pro... You can always upgrade later, or add it for another $140.
