How do you set up your fans?

Hi.

Been using a fan controller for a while now and not entirely happy with it so i'm giving it to a mate who I'm building a pc for.

I could get a new controller if i really wanted to but...

Having jut got a D14 with the ULNA, and a bequiet silent wings 2 with the molex to 12v, 7v and 5v reducer cables coming out of it, I feel it would be so much easier to set it up like that.

However, the only reducer i've managed to find is a zalman one for £7 which I refuse to pay for a little wire.

I've seen the 7v reducer trick on this forum, but dont really fancy doing that, plus I cant with my gentle typhoon anyway as it is 3pin.

So how do you lot set up your fans? I could go and fill my case up with all the bequiet ones as they seem pretty good and come with the reducer but they are 15 quid each which is a turn off.

I also dont fancy running all my fans off that one 7v connection as it'd look a mess.

I bought myself a scythe kaze q12 its a 12 fan controller with simple knobs and a led for each it's fantastic being able to see the fan spin up and down and the led dim or brighten depending on how hard you have I cranked
 
I have a slightly odd fan config. I go against the advice I give to other people, and use the fan headers on my motherboard for my fans. I use a mixture of UEFI controls and low noise adapters to get my fans spinning as slow as I can. I only use the fan connections that are close to the edge of the motherboards so as not to make it look messy.

Doing it this way also means that I didn't need to plug in the molex cable to my PSU, thus making cable tidying, something I really lack finesse in, a little easier for me.
 
I use every tool at my disposal.

My 2 main rad fans are set up on a curve thru my ASUS MB's software, that way they stay spinning as low as they can without letting the CPU get over 60C, without allot of sudden ramping like you get with some fan controllers or MBs.

My front Intake and exhaust fans are tempature controlled by my Lamptron Touch FC. They stay silent while still providing airflow thur the case, if the temp in the case rises past a certain point they speed up to help cool it down.

I use Fan speed adapters to cap off the top RPMs of a fan if it gets noisy at max RPMs if I want to use my FC's auto temp control feature.
 
I have mine connected to my cases fan controller (cosmos 2).

My H100 fans are connected to cpu. My gpu fans in my case are connected to gpu. My front fan to front and my hdd fan to hdd. So I can have low, medium or high settings for my fans. I keep everything on low when I am not using my pc and when I am such as gaming I put ever fan bar the H100 to high. The H100 are set to medium which keeps my cpu temps around 66 average on full load with a 4.6 overclock.

The exhaust I keep on 12v via a molex connector.

Works fine but I am thinking of changing the fans on the H100 for something a bit quieter but with good air flow.
 
My 4870 is loud as hell anyway, any sort of fan control would be useless for me as the sound of the case fans gets drowned out by my 4870 when i'm gaming anyway

I'm getting an AX750w next week so everything's gunna have to change anyway. I may order some more of the bequiet silent wings 2 because I'm really happy with the one I have and I think the adapter on it is a great thing to come with.

@Josh Weston - You say you dont run any molex's, i dont run any satas. just 1 molex from my psu then molex to sata converters for the dvd and hard drive. Thats my attempt at keeping things tidy

I dont realy fancy using motherboard headers as they dont look that great, and i prefer to have every cable I can going behind the motherboard tray as soon as it can, and then never have to see it again

You have an AX850 - is there any reason to spend another £15 to get the 850 over the 750? I'm kind of thinking if I get the 850w it'll be fine forever and I'll never need to change. Not too sure if that'll be the same with the 750.

The reason that I got the '850 is that the '750 was out of stock and I couldn't bear to wait any longer to start building!

But, the '850 has a 7 year warranty compared to the '750's paltry (

) 5 years. The extra 2 years helped me to justify the added cost.
 
Ahh, the 750 on ebuyer shows it to have a 7 year warranty as well?

Think I'm gunna go for the 850 for the hell of it. what's £15 nowadays

The might of my Intel HD4000 is...well, awful. But, until I get enough money together for either a 7950 or a 670, it shall have to do.

My case is the Fractal R3

Any idea where to get some low noise adapters? I'm currently using two pci slot controllers - a simple variable resistor where three fans connect to each.

Would rather get rid and have in-line speed reducers if poss - just can't seem to find any!

I've seen some 5v ones on Scan, but they seem very expensive for what they are.

You get very good adapters if you buy the new bequiet silent wings, or silverstone air penetrators though. That's what i've been doing now. The adapters include a Molex to 12v, 7v and 5v 3 pin fan, and with like a fan splitter cable you can run them all of like the 7v line.

Bitfenix also do a straight adapter to 7v: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CM-103-BX

Personally I'm quite in favour of companies like Bequiet, Silverstone, and Noctua as well giving you a good adapter with the fan when it seems very few other companies are willing to go out of their way to actually help you. Infact, I went to the effort of buying 2 silverstone fans just for the adapter :) obviously i used the fans as well, but I wouldnt have bought them if they didnt come with an adapter.
