hey

ok me and my dad are on the same internet, and i have been trying to get the homegroup thing to work so i can stream films/music to his laptop.

a few issues tho have arisen,i seem to have already got a homgroup set up and when i try to leave it,it says windows cannot let you leave, also the password keeps changeging and when i try to change it to something i would no it doesent let me it just stays the same and when i click next nothing happens.

i would rather set one up from scratch but it wont let me lol,i shared the file also to the home group and when my dad tried to connect we got errors, but my PC name was there.

it also dident say dain hase created a home group would you like to join,it sort of gave hime no choice lol.

last thing, the advanced options dont seem to save or the options for what files to share even tho i click save then log off,i got back and there bacj to normal again

Can you just set both computer workgroup to the same workgroup?

Start >> Right Click "Computer" >> Select properties >> Under "Computer name, domain and workgroup settings select "Change Settings" >> Next to "To rename this computer or change its domain or workgroup" Click Change. (See image attached)

Then Set your workgroup to what you want.

Should get you what you want, It all I do since I also have XP and server 2003 computers on the network and they don't have homegroup

I am not sure why it wont let you leave the homegroup or let you change advanced settings tho, because In advanced settings I would turn off password protect sharing under the Home or Work section.

Any ways let us know if it gets you any where.

Check Homegroup Listener and Homegroup Provider services are running on both PCs.  If not, enable them and then re-try to leave the homegroup.  If that works you can then disable both these services if you don't want to use the Homegroup function for networking (especially in a multi-OS architecture).

Once disabled follow ygg's advice to set up your network the traditional way.  Make sure the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is enabled and running.
