After building my current rig last year I have been looking into projects to keep feeding the beast that I have created.
The old system that I replaced Specs (it links to the compaq website) is about 7 years old it did me really well I added 2GB DDR to upgrade about 18 months ago and I am in the process of planning out a possible home server I currently have a 2TB Seagate attached which is 3/4 full I store a lot of media and music on this drive and don't want to place all my faith in one drive. I also want to host the media to other machines in the house 2 x laptops and a tablet pc.
I have been researching NAS boxes on the internet and haven't got the money to spend on these or build a brand a new setup yet
I have just been looking at my old machine that is stored away in the garage and ideas started flowing I know it would be possible to turn into a home server but I have a few questions.
The case that the current system in is in dire need of a clean (I know I wasn't into computer a few years ago I have learnt my lesson) and the other fact the system is pre bought from Curry's
Could I take the mobo out clean it as best I could and put it in to a new case also the stock fan (Cooler Master) on top of the mobo needs cleaning/replacing could I remove that clean the processor add some thermal paste and put a new cpu cooler on (I have a stock fan from my i7 2600k I didn't use the only think is the old system is a AMD build would that matter the thermal paste is also from the i7 cpu.
Also with adding drives to it having looked at the info on the specs page it has 2 x Sata ports they are 1.5GB/s can newer Sata 3GB/s HDD's be plugged in if so I could add 2 x 2TB internal drives and also the mobo has 2 x IDE ports one is used for the CD/DVD Drive and the other is free I think could I get a IDE-SATA converter to plug in to give me an extra Sata port allowing another 2TB drive to be attached.
That's all I can think of at the moment if anyone has any thoughts or if you want to ask anything I have missed let me know.
