Home Server for Storing Films/Pics = Practical?

I am looking for a solution for picture and film storage that can also be used to view them around the house on multiple devices. My idea is to make a 'server' PC that acts only as storage and somehow streams to other devices around the household.

Can anyone shed some light on the best way to go about this and how multiple devices could use this service, such as someone watching a film downstairs and someone looking through photos upstairs.

Check out Plex and XBMC, both are simple to set up and use. Personally I use Plex, running on an old core 2 quad setup. Happily plays 2 streams over local network and another to a remote access. It supports TV, Film and photo server all for free.

Plex works well. Can also stream to consoles and to smart TV's. Start watching on the TV in the lounge and then continue in another room or another device from the same point.

Looks pretty decent!
Is there a cheap workaround for non smart TV's though? I have decent Samsung TV's but they are not Smart.
Also are there any privacy options? I may want certain albums to only be accessible by me for example.

I have an ancient plasma but watch plex via the Blu-ray player which has a smart hub. Most network enabled devices should be compatible (dlna) but worth looking into soecific capability.. you may need an app or a subscription (well worth it)
