Hold HypoG By The Hands

Hello Guys, Welcome to the first edition of "Hold HypoG By The Hands".

Great news, exams are over, and I've time to finally set up my rig as the parts have arrived.

The rig in question is as per my signature and I've been having some fun with it. Well I've been testing to see if I have everything in good order, played some games with it at stock, etc. *Note: Idle GC temp 60*C, in game, it reduced to 54*c, perhaps because of me using the fan controller or maybe the GPU fan just spun faster.*

So, I'm glad to say the TRUE with the Yate Loon's are doing me proud, with a

28-32*C reading while gaming. However, the PWMIC and Chipset remain at higher 50's to lower 60's. If I open up my window, the Siberian breeze brings temperatures even lower, namely the cpu at 23-25* C akin to using h20 ;).

Right so the reason I started this thread is to have an online sort of journal for the trials and tribulations I'm going through on my quest to push my new (albeit low end) rig to it's limit without hopefully frying the chip. I hope everyone here will be able to guide me on my quest with your vast wealth of knowledge.

So who is on board?

hey HypoG, cool idea, i will be reading with every new update, also im still a novice at overclocking  but i hope i can help with your project :D

And about the temps, wow, if i had a magic window that could bring siberian winds i would be happy, when i open mine all i can get is a tropical hot wind blowing at my hardware and making it even hotter lol  .

ps. also like your said: we always get the chip fryied someday

good luck with the project man hope it OC alot

Alright guys, I'm sorry this took this long but I finally got some time to work on this.

Lets begin:

Here are my spec's:

Phenom 9950 BE 125 @ 2.6 GHZ

TRUE 120 Ultra Black 2x Silverstone Fans in push-pull config

BFG 9800 GTX+

OCZ Reaper DDR 2 6400 4GB (2X2GB Kit)

DFI UT 790FX

First step was to optimize cooling as I was very unhappy with 31-35*C @ stock speeds.

After messing around with some fans and the such, I've managed to lower idle temps to 21-28*C and sometimes if I open up the window, I get 13*C.

Ok, first things first. understanding how CPU FID / DID and NB FID / DID work. This is the best way to work with my DFI board when it comes to overclocking. Took me a while, but I'm pretty comfortable with it right now. I have opted AGAINST overclocking the HTT-Link as all I hear about the benefits are merely increase in voltages and temperatures that do not justify insignificant improvements.

CPU FID @ stock was 0A which reads to a multiplier of x13 when the DID is 1.

I know it is confusing but basically the CPU multiplier is calculated by [CPU FID / CPU DID]. CPU DID can be either 1,2,4,8 or 16. However, for my level of overclocking, the DID will always be 1. HEX 00 = 8, 01 = 8.5 02 = 9 etc etc

So first thing i did was change my CPU DID to 0C which increased multiplier by 1, x14. x14 gave me a clock speed of 2.8 ghz. After a day of testing, I figured I'd raise the NB Clock in tandem. So the hex code was 06 which gives a multiplier of 10. I increased this to 07 for a multiplier of 11.

I maintained stock voltages of 1.254 for all these increment. Everything ran fine.

I was hungry for more and raked the CPU DID by .5, x14.5 with a clock speed of 2.9ghz. Windows Booted but as windows start up took place loading up tonnes of programs, it went craaaaaazy and BSOD'ed me.

NOTE TO HYPOG: BSOD at 200 x 14.5 (2.9ghz) @ 1.254v

I raked up the voltage by just a notch to 1.264v and windows loaded up fine. Now I am running OCCT 1hr custom test small at high priority to check stability.

Will any kind soul here help me decipher the result graph once it's up? I want to do that before I proceed.

P.S. Am I doing this right? Have I missed a step? Am I taking all the right precautions? Is there something else I should do? Please, do inform me here in this thread!
