High q6600 temps

Hi there

Reading the ocz vendetta review, my quad seems to be running rather hot. I'm hitting 65+ degrees at stock voltage and 3ghz at load. The cooler is a Scythe Mugen (Infinity) and the TIM is AS5. Is there a chance my IHS on the cpu is wonky and worth lapping? I've ordered a new case, Coolermaster 690, so maybe that could do the job and cool it a bit better? Any ideas?

unless you go over around 75 degrees, it should be fine.

It may be your cooler, the latest scythe coolers are a bit pants, yu might want to try a freezer 7 pro cooler.
 
Make sure your heatsink is making good contact with your CPU and that there is not too much or too little TIM.

What prog are you using to measure, some are V. innacurate
 
I use either coretemp or cpuid hardware monitor. I have a beep set in the BIOS for when its cpu temperature measurement goes over 65 degrees, however this isn't the temperature of the cores, as there is only one value, so I guess this could be the IHS's temp? When I touch the heatsink it doesn't ever feel warm or hot like my old amd coolers did so I don't think its as though the heatsink is getting saturated with too much heat. I think maybe theres not enough pressure on the chip from the mounting? I've seen forums with guides on how to replace the intel pins with bolts etc which I might look into.

I fancy watercooling at some point, so really if this is a big problem I'll hold off until then.
 
Righttttt! The good news.. Pull the cooler off, gave it all a clean. Re-fitted the AS5. Fitted the cooler in the opposition orientation.

It was a complete PITA to get the damn pins in, one of which I think wasn't going in before. Now I've got lovely temps :) Under 40 at load, which is excellent IMO!

i had the exact same problem back with my E6400 back when i was on air. The temps were stupidly high at stock settings. Took it off, realised i hadnt clicked one of the pins in properly duh..
 
Yeah silly little b@$tard things! Was a real effort to get the last one in, looks like it was bending my damn motherboard quite a bit :mad:

Still, temps are looking great now
 
Ah those lol :). Yes mine has screws, thank god they weren't bolts like my old thermaltake big typhoon.. I had to bolt that down using nuts and a spanner, total pita to fit/remove (have to take the mobo out of the case to remove the hsf!).

Under 40 at load? Wow, that's really impressive, especially considering that it is at 3.2 GHz. Mine, on high end air cooling, according to CoreTemp gets up to 68 C, and that's at 3.0 GHz! Great job, whatever your secret is.

Not sure really, I've got a Scythe Mugen cpu cooler. Erm.. lot of case fans. I guess it quite cold here being Wales 'n all. Maybe my motherboard is stingy with core voltage. Is your cpu the Go stepping?
 
Hmm, not Go. Just so you aren't confused, the acronym is G0, not GO. No, mine's B3, but that still shouldn't mean a difference of more than 25 degrees. I have 5 case fans (Antec 900 case), and the ambient temperature is typically 24 C. My core voltage is pretty much stock, at 1.2875V.
 
Using the Ultima-90 in south of england, 1.3v at 3ghz I had about 51degrees max load, just for comparison.

Cannot see how you can have 40degrees. How long was it stressed for?
 
Been folding for half an hour or so on all cores at 100%. Not trying to BS anyone, heres the results..



I'll leave it going rest of the day but the temps rarely hit 40 or more, there is always the very cool core and usually one slightly warmer than the rest. I believe these temps are pretty accurate, I can touch the heatpipes on my Scythe and they aint hot.
